i think AAC files work as well, but it doesn't matter what format the CD's are in you can import them as MP3's are ATRAC formats.

want to stream video pictures music off your pc to the ps3 heres the program. it was made by a bloke on the ps3 forums its a beta but easy to use.

Based on my original PSPortal this will allow you to transfer files to and from your PC's hard disk and your network directly to your PS3 without memory cards or getting off your bottom. You can even set it so you can access your files on the internet so you can share them with your friends.

Its similar to Red Kawa but with the following differences.
Looks better
Powered by HFS, more secure, more robust, more configurable
Doesnt modify your PC, you run it, you close it, its your choice
Browse your photos folder and it shows a preview of the photos
Way more options for the more advanced user.

download it

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=7KMORCF3

Instructions
Download and install this http://www.megaupload.com/?d=7KMORCF3
Install to the default folder NOTE: If your running a 64bit OS then ensure it goes to 'Program Files' NOT 'Program Files (x86)!
right click each of the folders 'Music', 'Videos' etc and select 'Edit Resource'
Find the folder you want to share i.e music
Open your PS3's browser and enter the IP address of your PC (Shown in the top of the HFS box). You can even browse from your PC, PSP or Mac.
