http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-01-31-capcom-there-is-a-possibility-of-resident-evil-series-reboot

Resident Evil developer Capcom has said that there is a possibility of a reboot for its 17-year-old survival-horror-turned-action-horror franchise.

Capcom's Masachika Kawata, producer of Resident Evil: Revelations, made the comments to Eurogamer during a discussion of his latest project, the Revelations remake for PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U.

Questioned on the likelihood of changes to the series after middling reviews of Resident Evil 6 and the suggestion of a more open-world approach, Kawata mentioned the possibility of a reboot.

"If we did [go with an open-world], we would want to preserve what Resident Evil is and what makes it appealing to fans, while also making it accessible to new players. It would almost entail having a slight reboot to get the series into a place where it would work with open-world gameplay. That's just a personal opinion.

A reboot?

"A lot of decisions would have to be taken before something like that is done to the series, but it is something that..." he trailed off. "There is a possibility."

Kawata has worked on every game in the series since the acclaimed Resident Evil 4, and on classic Capcom titles such as PN03, Onimusha and Dino Crisis before that.

But it's in the upcoming console version of Revelations, a game which reintroduced some of the atmosphere and classic horror of earlier entries in the series, that he sees clues to the future of the Resident Evil.

"Once we see Revelations released on consoles, we'll be looking very carefully at how the title is received and what feedback we get. I think we'll get a lot of input from the fanbase and the media on what it means for Resident Evil, and what it could mean for the future of the series. We'll definitely be looking at that as a signpost for where we need to be going next.

"Moving forward I can see us focusing even more on the horror aspect and fear in the series, and see us making something scarier than we have already."

Kawata talked extensively about changes to the series, but dismissed the idea this was a direct response to Resident Evil 6, a game that Capcom said had only been successful "to some degree". After a brisk period of sales around launch, the publisher later admitted that the game's final total was "certain to fall short of the plan".

"We don't want to respond directly to, for example, the reaction to Resident Evil 6," Kawata explained, "[rather than] taking a chance to re-examine the series as a whole within ourselves, within the company, and decide where we want to take it from there.

"If anyone is waiting for an open-world Resident Evil, I think it will certainly be quite a while,"

Resident Evil: Revelations producer Masachika Kawata

"If anyone is waiting for an open-world Resident Evil, I think it will certainly be quite a while," he continued. "So in the meantime, I recommend giving Revelations a try."

Resident Evil: Revelations is set to arrive for PC, PS3 and Wii U in the UK on 24th May.

It originally launched for 3DS in January last year. Sales were decent for 3DS games at the time, Kawata said, although Capcom would have liked "a little more".

"Going by the 3DS market at the time we released the game, it was definitely a success and we're certainly hoping we can repeat that success with the home console version.

"Given the large development costs we had on the 3DS version, we would have liked to have even a little more sales than we did in the end. But that doesn't mean we saw it as a failure by any means."

The new version of Revelations won't appear on PlayStation Vita, a decision Kawata shed more light on.

"The Vita is a very impressive piece of kit, but the fundamental concept of this release was to bring Revelations to home consoles. It's not a statement about the Vita or what it is, or my personal feelings towards it. It's just that this is the big screen, home console version of Resident Evil: Revelations."

Vita sales figures - which trail the 3DS by some margin in Japan - were not a reason, he concluded.

"The conversation literally didn't even get to the point where something like that would be a consideration. Once the decision had been made to release it for home consoles it was never a possibility."

"we would want to preserve what Resident Evil is and what makes it appealing to fans" - oh, you mean so unlike what you've been doing, and instead trolling your fans with RE5 and RE6?

Also Crapscum, GET RID OF THE STUPID PARASITE MAJINI GANADOS THINGS, WHATEVER THEY'RE CALLED! (see, I don't even know what the name of those stupid new monsters are, since they're so stupid and unforgettable.)

One more thing. Unforgetable means that you can't forget something. If granados are unforgetable I believe they did a good job if you can't forget them, don't you think? Also, I think you meant forgetable. Just trying to help buddy ;)

Wait...WAIT, WAIT,WAIT,WAIT,WAIT, WHAT???!

Do people still believe that the only problem with DmC is Donte???? The whole game is the problem. 30FPS, clunky combat, bad characters, bad story, bad dialogue, tons of juvenile cussing and dialogue, etc. Ninja Theory are mediocre developers and have never made a good game before.

Also, if you go by Metacritic, didn't it have like a 2.4? Also, you have to keep in mind that FFXIII got around 8/10's, and FFXIII series sucks, so you can't really go by ratings all that much. Also, those piss poor mediocre games Enslaved and Heavenly Sword got around 8's.

Revelations was awesome though, and I would buy it new, except I do not want to support Crapscum. I was going to buy the new MH, but I don't want to support Crapscum, so I might just buy them used.

Just in that post alone, I said that I like Monster Hunter. I love lots of things. How in the hell do you get "I don't like everything", since I have only posted that Yoshi Yarn, RE5 & 6, PAGGs such as CoD & pewpews, DmC, FFXIII series, Splinter Cell are bad? Seriously, there is so much more to gaming. I don't know where you get everything from.

Those people that took their time to destroy game series should have thought of that before they trolled the fans by destroying once beloved franchises. Their fault.
Apparently you do not understand the point behind buying used, and the goal is so Crapscum doesn't get any $$ that they do not deserve.

Yes, absolutely. However, I don't think I trust Crapscum enough to do that.

uh no the user rating is that low when hundreds of fan boys flooded the poll with 1's, the actual reliable rating are the 13 other official journalist reviews. also NT made heavenly sword and Enslaved which were two awesome games. but everyone has their opinions *shrugs* you think their games are garbage while i find them very enjoyable and apparently alot of other journalists do

I cannot trust the opinions of people who think that piss poor mediocre Enslaved and Heavenly Sword are good. I cannot trust you nor reviewers then. I tried the demo for DmC and it is terrible.

Also, GTAIV, MGS4 and GoW3 all got like 10s, despite all being meh games as well. As I said before, FFXIII has good scores despite being a sucky game.

Are you telling me that you would quit your job/career for something as minimal to please ungrateful fanboys as yourself? Have you ever held a job or a family? You sir, are the most immature poster I have seen on these PS3 forums. Oh wait my apologies, you are just going to attack me next by telling me that is an opinion that is wrong because their are plenty of other spoiled brats like yourself on here. =]

If they're only capable of making sucky games then they deserve to be out of a job. So, you're saying that someone that are unable to do their job, should keep their job? WTF? Please do yourself a favor and never become a manager or business owner.

Instead of being video game developers, if they make games that suck and can't make good games then they should work at McDonald's instead.

So you're saying that the crappy developers of Resident Evil Operation Raccoon City should be employed as VG devs??????????

If only my opinion matters, then how come my opinion is with the majority? DmC is a floppy bomb piece of garbage trash. Sales for it are terrible. The people have spoken and DmC has flopped, and flopped hard. DmC should have never been made in the first place and Ninja Theory deserve to be out of business.

Looks like I win.

Yeah you do win, you win at making yourself look like a douche. Majority rule? Really guy? Sales? Even so, really? Darksiders 2 sold terrible, same as No More Heroes and both of those were amazing. Your logic is the stupidest thing I've heard man. Stop being such a mainstream fanboy. DmC was well received as well, it only flops because of simple minded people as yourself that cannot take a reboot. I seriously hope Resident Evil does get rebooted to cater exactlly the opposite of what you want just to crush your soul. RE6 was fun and DmC was as well, now accept that your "majority rule" in video games does not matter, video games are not a democracy. And like my own thread after this I'm not going to bother anymore. I can't express myself as I would if you were in front of me so their is absolutely no point. Good day, hope RE7 continues the RE trend =D

You must be blind as a bat if you think DmC was well received, as it is one of the most hated games ever made.

Resident Evil is already dead, so it doesn't matter if it gets worse.
If RE6 is so much fun then why are there so many QTEs and how could it possibly be fun when it's been completely Clone of Duty-ized?

Darksiders 2 is an exception, not the rule.

Know who is the real douche?

Answer: Crapscum for destroying Megaman, DMC and Resident Evil, out of spite in order to crush the hearts of the fans of those series.

Anyhow, you are an enemy to video games since you're anti-good games and pro-bad games, which means that you are helping to destroy video games, and so your opinion on anything does not matter.

Dude, it's actually a very well made game. Anyone who thinks it "sucks" either hasn't played it, just isn't into that type of game, or is still upset about the changes they made. I find the combat to be very fast and fluid, the imagery is astounding, the characters and dialog are actually quite tolerable, and the story gets pretty interesting too (better than most horror movies, at least. lol). After revisitting DMC 3 and 4 just recently, I can tell you that the game is no more of a giant cheese fest than those two. It just takes a darker approach. And I couldn't really tell much difference in the speed and effectiveness of the combat. It's not the same, but it's definitely not worse either. Also, demons don't look like raggedy Anne dolls with knives for legs. Forget that it has DMC in the title and play it, dude. Even if you don't like it, it's a hell of a lot better than you're giving it credit for.

So you're basing your entire rant on the fact that a demo didn't impress you? You do realize there is A LOT more to a game than a small sampling in a demo, right? Admittedly the writing for the Succubus boss fight from the demo was atrocious, but to say that the entire story is bad and the characters are bad without actually seeing the rest of the game is a joke. No wonder people can't take you seriously. The combat is actually very fluid too. Switching between weapons is fast and smooth, seamlessly moving from combo to combo. Maybe I was spoiled by the 60 FPS on PC, but the game plays pretty much just as well any past DMC game. But hey, if you want to continue crying about a game you haven't even really played you go right ahead. You're just showing that you have not the slightest idea what you're talking about.

Lol. I didn't even catch that part. I knew he hadn't played it. I didn't realize he actually admitted as much. I didn't play the demo, but I've seen quite a few folks say that it does not do the game justice. And frankly, I wouldn't judge any game by its demo (even though that's why they exist), because sometimes demos just do a piss poor job of representing the full game. See: Valkryia Chronicles, Bayonetta, Dead Space, Batman AA, and many others...

oh boy I'm bookmarking this thread. Looks like fun. Anyway on topic, RE was 'sorta' rebooted as a series of movies. Seeing as how well that went I'm not optimistic they can pull off a reboot game-wise that wouldn't feel inferior to the original. Instead I wouldn't mind seeing a new horror survival IP, look at Dead Rising, it was great and really successful and it wasn't slapped with a Resident Evil title just because it had zombies in it. I don't understand Capcom's obsession with milking their good franchises to death.

Unreal Engine - first of all, DmC is using this awful game engine, which is a big reason why everything in this game is so ugly and grainy looking.
Linear - walk down hallway path, cutscene, go further down hallway path, cutscene, walk further down path, cutscene. Yeah, not a fan of this formula in games.
Donte and Virgin are brothers and they talk about each other's junk.Oh yeah, like you say, that's SUPERB WRITING!!!!!!!!!!

I have watched videos about the game, genius.

I played the demo and the combat is anything but fluid. See, the problem is with you DmC defenders. You lie and distort the truth to make it seem like DmC is good, when it is not.

Lol. There are many secrets hidden of the beaten path, exactly like the other games in the series. Except this time they added some rather enjoyable platforming. Honestly, that "formula" is exactly what the series has been all along. Also, the writing has never been great in this series, if you are trying to take it seriously. Classic Dante has some of the cheesiest one liners in any game ever. Who cares if new Dante screams the F word in once seen or references his brothers junk? You're just being silly.

First of all, I have never played a DMC. I never cared for the series in one way or the other. I was neutral, neither liked nor disliked. The games didn't look bad, just not my style.

However, Ninja Theory are one of the worst developers out there and they need to go out of business because they suck so bad. I am very anti-Ninja Theory.

Guess it makes sense since Japanese developers are much much much better and creative than unimaginative western devs.

Again, you're just making yourself look like a gigantic asshat with absolutely no credibility because you still haven't REALLY played the game. A small sampling in a demo does not represent the full game.

In fact, if Donte was a real person, I would smack him in the mouth and make that douche bleed. Not sure why I would need to play any longer to know that I hate a character that I already know I hate.

You must think Kratos (GoW) is a likeable character - HA!

anyway...

First of all, I have never played a DMC. I never cared for the series in one way or the other.soundcellx
Hell, dude, that's all you had to say. If that's the case, you couldn't possibly know if Ninja Theory did a better or worse job than the original Japanese developers, and I've just participated in one of the dumbest conversations in the history of Gamespot. Shinanigans!

 Do you realize how many of those user reviews were instantly 1.0's because they didn't like the new Dante before even playing the game? It's just as bad as Amazon's user scores where people artificially bring down the sores by giving it the lowest possible score simply because they didn't like a certain aspect, rather than giving a full review based on the full merits of the product. I'm much more inclined to look at the unbiased critic scores which last i saw were in the 85 range for all 3 platforms. But yeah, the game is absolute trash

Yes, I do know that Ninja Theory did a worse job since Heavenly Sword and Enslaved (both I have played). Finished Mediocre Sword and the combat was super clunky.

Enslaved was also a very clunky game and I did not finish it since the game was very terrible.

Capcom - they often produce good quality games (not always, RE6), but you sure as sweet hell can bet on them making better games than Mediocre Theory. Not sure what never playing the series has to do with DmC being good or not though.

Oh, I don't feel good about myself since I just participated in one of the dumbest conversations in the history of GameSpot, since I was conversing with you!

Well, then don't change the game series then, if you're not going to like the real fans retaliating and hating on one of their favorite series being changed for the worse. We wouldn't have a problem if the changes were for the better, but they never are.

You casual gamers ruined my favorite video game series of all time - Final Fantasy with the atrocious XIII series.

Let's see what else you casuals ruined for me:

Resident Evil

Splinter Cell

Zelda Skyward Sword (I know that the series will go back to being great though)

You honestly don't see how broken that logic is? According to you, since NT made two games you did not like, any game they make from now on will be trash. Already, your bias has prevented you from giving the game a chance, and you end up with zero credibility when discussing its quality. And you since you talk as if the Japanese devs were the better developers, it does matter whether or not you played their versions in order to make an honest comparison. Basically, you're talking out of your butt. It's all good though. This is the internet afterall. :P

lol What does 'you casuals' mean? How exactly am I classifying as a 'casual' gamer? You have no idea what kinds of games I play or have played in the past. I've been playing games since the early 90's on the NES across all platforms and all genres from RPGs, to FPS, to platformers, to action/adventure, to strategy, and more. But it's cool. Because I like a game that supposed casual gamers have ruined I MUST be a casual gamer and it's all my fault that the new DMC doesn't live up to the past DMC games that you've never played. I'm deeply sorry for ruining the series you've never played.

I have played the demo to DmC, and the demo proves that DmC is trash. So, the only broken logic here is yours.

Oh, and I take that back. I have played DMC4 for like 3-4 hours, it's just been years. Also played one of the other ones for an hour or two, like 10 years ago.

Quit talking out of your butt.

Doesn't matter if I've never played any of the other games or not. Games can be judged on their own merits. Have I played a Superman game before? Can I judge Superman 64 based off of Superman 64? The answer is, yes. Why yes, I can.

Also, I am sticking up for DMC fans, because I too know what it feels like to have your favorite series ruined. I empathize with them and stick up for them against you trolls who are ruining the video game industry.

@Soundcellx you're colossal idiot and self entitled hater, but you're right. If The Majority of people hate a good game then the truth and facts are no longer relavent, nothing cant beat stupidy on a mass scale, so . . . . Congradulations, you win, Idiots. But the real idiot is anybody who tries to reason with such foolishness, they're the people that really shame the community. Thanks for reading, please continue.

One more thing. Unforgetable means that you can't forget something. If granados are unforgetable I believe they did a good job if you can't forget them, don't you think? Also, I think you meant forgetable. Just trying to help buddy ;)

happy_dude64

sure I made a mistake and should have typed "forgettable". At least I admit to my mistakes though, and nobody is perfect. See, I man up and admit.

I guess those stupid monsters must be forgettable to you if you call them "gRanados".

But are they called ganados or majini or what are those stupid parasitic monsters called?

happy_dude64

Wait, you are the one who ruins the things that I like, and I'm the one who needs to die? What?

How about you don't ruin long running franchises in the first place?

If Resident Evil is doing so great then why are Capcom unhappy with sales numbers and talking about REbooting the franchise?

I wasn't aware that I made these video games that you dislike. I, and many others do like them so grow up and learn to play new IPs if the old ones aren't cutting it for you.

If you are buying these games, then i am lumping you in with the rest of them. You are part of the problem.

Why should I have to move onto new IPs? You're the one who should have to move onto new IPs. All the games I like have lost their identity and have gradually been becoming like all other modern gen games.

Avatar image for happy_dude64

No, you should either quit gaming or find new IPs, don't ruin what the real fans like. All you say is your opinion, well guess what, your in the minority if sequels continue. Good day, I'm done speaking with anyone that isn't at least at a high school level. Also don't even bother to reply because I cease to exist to all your stupid logic threads.

Your logic is ass backwards and broken.

The real fans don't like what you've done to ruin their series.

People now dislike DmC, FFXIII, RE, Splinter Cell, etc. The real fans do not play the new trashy versions of those series, since they're ruined.

Bad day to you.
