The new PS3 only does 480i unless you use HDMI?

WTF is this?

FTA:
Sony has also implemented AACS copyright protection in the CECH-3000B, which is an industry standard for all Blu-ray players sold on the market from 2011 onward. This means this new PS3 will only output 480i, rather than 1080i, over component connections while playing Blu-ray content. This is a non-issue for most people who use HDMI, but severely disappointing for those still using analog connections.

So if I buy the CECH-3000B I can't capture gameplay videos in HD since my recorder only supports analog? Or is the 480i limit on movies only?

Movies only. They just have to meet certain requirements to be able to sell it as a blu-ray player.

Its just for Bluray Movies it looks like, oh well.. not an issue, if you're still using analog cables then you shouldn't be worrying about bluray anyway ;) I highly doubt they'd only allow 480i via Component for gameplay though.. You should be good..

Looks like it was the Industry who did it, not Sony which sucks and this was posted about a week ago but still a stupid thing to do when probably 60% of blu ray players are PS3's to begin with.

Hopefully it is just movies but I wouldn't put it past them to screw up your gaming experience. I remember when the PS3 first launched many people were outraged the games didn't support 1080i-only HDTVs. Sony's response was "buy a 720p TV" :/

"Sony has tweaked the refreshed version of the PS3 to be a little more "green;" power consumption is now rated at 200W, which is a 30W reduction from the previous model. For reference, previous configurations of the PS3 slim used up to 80W at peak load and 67W when idle."

Lolwut. The new one uses 200w while the old one used 80w max...and thats a 30w reduction? Maybe the 200w is supposed to be 20w, but even then the 30w reduction would put the previous model at 50w. :3 Who knows?

Oh Sony, Sony....

Looks like games too will require an HDMI cable to play in HD. This is like that "buy a 720p TV" crap all over again.

This only affects playing blu ray movies, everything else works fine. This is a new standard with the blu ray commission board or whatever the name of that organization is

It only affects people who buy the new PS3s at the end of this year, or beginning of next year, so I bet if you are in this forum it won't affect you at all.

It only affects BluRay playback.

Gameplay can be HD using Component cables if that's what you prefer.

This is not Sony's fault, they could have either removed BluRay playback, or restricted it to HDMI. What would you do?
