Hi guys, I need to resolve an issue that's been bugging me for ages. I will probably buy a PS3 this christmas, but what i want to know is are they capable of playing PS1 and/or PS2 games? I've heard all different kinds of stuffs, like the newer consoles will not play some of the games, so i was just wondering if anyone could fill me in please?

The new consoles will not play any PS2 games, all consoles including the new modules can play PS1 games.

All of the current Playstation 3 models will play original Playstation games.

As for Playstation 2 games, it actually depends where you live.

In the UK, the only model which can play PS2 games is the 60GB PS3. It is discontinued, so you won't be able to find one of those unless you buy it off eBay or pre-owned from a shop. The new 80GB PS3's that are coming out in the UK do NOT play Playstation 2 games.

In the US, the 60GB PS3 and the 80GB PS3 play PS2 games. There is a difference though. The 60GB Model will play pretty much all PS2 games, because it is actually running the games by using a chip. As for the 80GB, it is running them by using emulation, so not all games will run and some may run with problems. As far as I know, both the 60GB and the 80GB are discontinued in the US, so as I said before, to get one, you are going to need to buy it second hand or from eBay.

Hope this helped you bro.

Not true. The 40GB's have never been backwards compatible with PS2 games, only PS1 games.

Also, only the 80GB's in the US have PS2 backwards compatiblity.

incorrect , the 20 gb the 60 gb both available at launch had hardware ps2 had to operate all of its games ,, the old 80 gb model released some time in 2007 has software emulation of 80 percent or more if they updated it , of all ps2 and ps1 games ,

but no new ps3 has ps2 bc

Is there any possibility that they will do the emulation with software - perhaps when they are ready to kill off the PS2? It would be great to have PS2 games on the PSN to download.

Here's the lowdown on the throwdown. The 20GB, 60GB, and former 80GB PS3 models can play PS2 games. the 20GB and the 60GB play it using the PS2 hardware built into them while the 80GB uses PS2 software emulation to play them so only 85% or so PS2 games will work on it. Now, if you want to assure yourself that you'll get a PS3 with backwards compatibility with PS2 games, try and find the PS3 Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle, as the models in that bundle are the 80GB PS3s with the software emulation which will run PS2 games. The percentage may rise from 85% in the near future with a patch. What they are doing now is discontinuing the 80GB PS2 backwards compatible PS3 and upgrading the 40GB models' hard drive to 80GB. So basically, the new models are 40GB PS3 models but with 80GB hard drives and no PS2 play at all. There is a 160GB model coming out soon but it will not have PS2 play either. All PS3 models have PS1 play and that is a fact. So if you REALLY want PS2 play on your PS3, go and find the 80GB Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle as soon as you can. Good luck soldier. You have just been informed by the Acid.

I think it's only a mistake, he probably meant original 60 and 20gb (one withouth silver trim and no wifi)
