Is this extra hard/loud work of my PS3's fan a sign of something catastrophic for the system? I clean it regularly and it has stayed in the well-ventillated spot it has always been for the past year and a half+ with never a hitch . . . until now.

Anyone out there know what the problem could be and have a solution to said problem??

Nothing really to worry about, the thing is when temps start to rise it takes more to cool the PS3. You may try to stand the system vertically in a open area because this seems to help allow a little more heat to escape the PS3.

This normally happens when u play for several hours, the fans star to run louder, but don't worry just let the ps3 cool down for a bit before you start playin again.

I got the original 60gig ps3, it was whisper quiet. I sold that then got an 40gig later and have notice how much louder it is over my 60gig more so when watching dvds then anything. I have found that the fans work harder when it gets hot so it gets louder, also if you take a can of air to clean the vents out this helps to. Im sure you have nothing to worry about really. it just means the ps3 is doing its job at cooling down when the fans kick in overdrive.

Mine does that, all the time.
It waits until it's like 1am& people are sleeping,
so obviously Sony is trying to promote Insomniac Games.

i think there might be 2 things , 1st your fans needs to be clean , second like others said it might be the heat if that was caused by heat u should put it in acool place and put it free to vents on the ps3 so that the hot air gets away from te console .

Yeah, it happens on my 80 after an hour of gaming. Nothing bad as far as I can see.

It happens to me quite often now, since the temperature in my room gets warmer.

Not that i recommend you or anyone else try this but pretty soon i'm gonna crack open my ps3 and clean all the dust on the inside. I've got the original 60G and my warranty is well past so there really is no harm in opening it now. I've debated on doing this for awhile now b/c when the system was new it was sooo quite i couldnt even tell it was on. Now the fans kick on after only couple minutes of game play. I've done everything like vacuuming it, leaving it in open spaces, dusting around it regularly but still that doesnt seem help the issue. i'll post post back to let ya know if this works any better.
