so yesterday after a game of splits-screen mw2, my ps3 turned off by itself. it wouldn't turn on again. after a bit of googling, i realized i had what you call the yellow light or blinking red light of death. i never knew ps3s even had that, but now i know. i bought this ps3 from ebay for $390 back in january '07 when a ps3 cost $600. so obviously my warranty expired a long time ago. it's a 60gb launch model that says mfg. december '06 on the bottom. after some googling around, i found out that i could send it to sony to fix it for $150. will they actually fix my ps3, or will they just send me a refurb? will the refurb be the same model as mine? my ps3 is a little unique because: -it has hardware backward compatibility -it has upgraded 320gb hard drive (originally 60gb) - 4 usb ports/ flash memory - it ran ubuntu linux [until recently..] simply put, this was the best ps3 model. will all my data stay on my hard drive? because i know that you can't swap your hard drive with another ps3 unless you format it.
You will either get another 60 gb refurb unit back for $150 since ur out of warranty, or a PS3 slim for $119 i believe. Your data sorry to say will be gone.

yeh my ps3 is currently dead so thought i wud i ask but they dont do it
u'll lose all ur data, swap ur harddrive back and that's all u can basically do, but u do recieve ur original PS3 MODEL NOT the SAME PS3, they only give u a referb but it's the will be the 60GB
if i break the warranty seal and try to fix it myself, would they still take it back for a $150 with a broken seal? i've seen people that have fixed theirs on youtube, but you have to open up the whole thing.
Its never nice when one of your favorite electronics don't work.I also have the original 60 GB and I had a problem where PS3 would not play Blu-ray movies or games but it would still play DVD's CD's and work in XMB menu. Once I sent it for repair, I got back everything the way sent it. I still use it as my main gaming system and PS3 Slim for movies.

i fixed mine using the reflow method that is shown on youtube (glinsky or the other guy). it DOES work but if you dont follow instructions you may mess it up. my ps3 is the BC type too so i didnt want to lose that power to play ps2 games. if youre a daring fellow give it a shot, if not just pay them the money i guess :/

yeh ive just realised it was a person ebay doin this but they seem to have dissapered now though
i would hate to have my 80gb (the one that came with motorstorm) to have YLOD. it was the greatest to me. i even use the bc for my old ps2 games. im scared :o
I repaired mine myself but it was the power supply the failed so i bought one off eBay and fixed it myself. Although now I think it is developing a video problem screen goes black now and then for a little bit.

this is about right, but they raised the 60gb repair to 179.99 plus tax that is. or for 119 u can get a refurb. 120slim
