Perhaps this is a question to be asked to all console owners, but i'll put it in my favourite group for now.

Anyhow.

Recently Great Britain won a world tournament at gaming.

The leader of the team, Michael O'Dell said

"such is the dedication and skills required of gamers who compete at the highest level, they should be recognised at major sporting events, like the Olympics."

So, do you think in today's world, gaming could or should be treated as a true sport and be in the Olympics?

I would have to say no. Gaming isn't a sport, and because of that it will go against tradition if it was in the Olympics.

IMO.

Are you kidding? Seriously? The very question just sounds ridiculous to me. How can you compare world class athletes, people that have actually achieved something, to people that spend the majority of their lives glued to a TV screen? Not gonna happen. Ever.

I've just thought I haven't given my view.

I don't think it should. Some of the stuff Olympians do is quite remarkable and requires a lot of hard work. Gaming can require skill, but not the same type of skill as athlete's produce.

I think that guy thinks too much of himself...

Olympics is about physical sport events, people train for years pushing their bodies to the limits. Gaming is just a pass-time IMO

I thought the thread was a joke at first. I mean I love gaming as much as the next person, but this is a little ridiculous.

Whoever votes yes is a pure IDIOT.

"After all the events, the gymnastics, the swimming, the running, the biking, and a heck of alot of other stuff, it all comes down to the final event. The videogame contest!"

That'd be so stupid it's not even funny.

It shouldn't be in the Olympics, but it should be a respected form of professional competition. It's unfair to downgrade it to 'just sitting in front of the screen all day' as gaming still requires many key elements of traditional sports such as endurance and skill. Let's not forget not all sports require you to be super athletic, golf, bowling or shooting don't ask for overly physical actions yet the spirit of competition and hard work remains.

maybe

It's almost like Poker...lol

The problem with video games is there's no standard and there's so many games

Sports or any game usually have been around for a long time but the problem with video games is they last only a few years before people move onto the next one

Older games that are still played and have the rules set in stone like Counter-strike 1.5 or 1.6 and Starcraft could become a sport...

Once the rules change with a patch or update, thats like changing some major rule in the NBA or something, doesn't happen tha toften

Big no!

How can one train for a game four years ahead of time? What game would it be? What platform would it be on?

I think air guitarists should get recognized by the olympics. That would be sweeet!

yes it should... and those who say gaming cant be considered a sport obviously never played on an high skilled competition level on a game and are probably some casual console gamers.

that's like getting a bunch of friends and playing some 5-a-side football match (yes... the normal football, not the american one) and saying because we just play it for fun it's not really a sport.

also i remind the whole lot of you that chess is a sport and most of the competitors in olimpic sports like shooting are quite fat

"such is the dedication and skills required of gamers who compete at the highest level"... To be the best in anything requires skill and dedication. Farting the hardest in the world will require dedication and skill as well. Spitting with accuracy and farthest requires skill and dedication. Should they be in the Olympics?

Lol, wow, that comment deserves to be kicked in the you know what.. Do you even know what Olympians go through to be able to do what they do today? It takes so much training, discipline and level of commitment that I have never seen in any sport or anything for that matter. Olympics is the cream of the crop, the best of the best, nothing can match. Not the NBA, not Tour de France, nothing. Gaming as a regular sport is laughable.. let alone an Olympic sport? WTF, are you kidding me? Michael O'dell needs to go hang himself, like, right now.

Edit: I'm back.. I'm still not over that comment that he made. Wow.. For someone like myself that really admires these athletes in the Olympics, I am shocked and appalled. I'm going to save that quote and remember it. I hate that guy.

Gaming isn't a sport, it's called Olympics because it has to do with physical fitness and for the human body to perform to its extent.

No, gaming should not be in the Olympics. Besides it being more so a hobby and not a sport. Gaming can never be compared on the level that the Olympics are in. No gamer on this earth should have the privilege to be mentioned with any of these great athletes. I do think that gaming should have their own types of tournaments.

No, HELL NO. Don't need to make it worse cause now, they say "poker is a sport" and now all these fat guys have a reason to call themselves "athletes" (seen it a few times on TV and I laughed my balls off)

Now they're trying to push "competitive eating" as a sport to. You know when a society is fat a lazy when you're comparing Poker, Gaming or Eating to something like Football or Hockey.

Not the olympics per say but I can see an event that gets as big as something like the X games or something that is made just for gaming... The olympics is totally out the question though...

If gaming went into the olympics it would just be another episode of the biggest loser
