I was playing resistance 2 campaign when I died. After I died the screen went black as if it were loading and stayed black for a looong time. I evetually decided to shutoff the system and now i cant get it to play again. I just got the ps3 today so I dont know how to manually start the game but when I put in the game it is not auto-starting.

to manually start the game, go to the game section on the XMB and scroll up or down to the game disc icon

Go to the game tab on the XMB. It should appear there, and when you press X, it should start the game.

you must have a faulty laser lense. And this is the "other thread" I was talking about.

what PS3 SKU do you have? the 80 gig model? please tell me what other games you have installed. I am willing to try to recreate this issue to see if it is software. .

you can try to reset the console, if that doesn't work you should just take the console back to the store and get a new one, because it would still be returnable to the store.

But before you take it back, make sure it isn't just a user error. If the disc doesn't appear at all when inserted then you must have a faulty laser lense.

The game wouldn't have been the problem, some things that have defects will work for a short while before not working at all, which may be the case with your laser lense.

Make sure you have the most recent PS3 firmware, then restore your system. This sounds like an issue with the Cell OS firmware. I will try to reproduce the issue but if it was this way before hand there is not a lot i can do on my end.

the newest version of PS3 Operating System (software) can be updated through internet. It doesn't cost anything.

the disc option will only come up when a disc is inserted. The only time a game usually won't auto-start is when you start the system and a disc was left in it. Did you eject and reinsert the disc?

first thing, eject the disc and reinsert it with the console still on, see if it will start.

and there had to be an option to manually start the game otherwise the game wouldn't have started. When it auto started you should see the disc icon on the game section of the XMB before it actually boots the game up.

Reformatted my old stock 80 gig HDD to something random to force a restoration of the whole PS3 OS. (it stores it in a separate partition from the file system, i don't think i could do this on the PS3 itself) Please confirm your PS3's Firmware is the most recent version. *edit: silly me, forgetting the PS3 doesn't like older firmware*
