question on life with playstation

u know the thing below the download manager. whats it for. why would i want or need to use this. i havent synced it or whatever its asking of me cause i dont know what its gonna do. does anyone have an answer for this? any help would be nice. thanks.

I use it while listening to music and as *screensaver*, reason for that is Folding@home: if my PS3 is running and I'm not using it (fully), why not help to defeaat cancer? oO
