I've been saying since the 40 GB PS3 came out that PS2 back compat would come eventually. Sony has always been working on full software emulation. They cut out the PS2 hardware to save money.

People were upset that PS3s didn't have PS2 back compat. Now, when Sony announces it will be added back by software, the internets will explode with excitement.

Either way, I've got a 60 GB with full hardware support for PS2. :)

yeah.. but we most consider this one thing... the video game industry is brutal specialy with m$ tryin to buy everything out at the very least.. and sony is getting eaten alive because of ps3s insane value and its very decent price.. but its too much more for parents to buy ther kids w/e so lil johhny n lil janey will be playin ther wii's and 360s... i like wii just has nothin commin out xcept tenchu 4 which i might buy the wii for if its truly stelar like it deserves to be as im going to be mad that its not on the most powerful console ever ps3 :( but im glad about sony releasing these better priced ps3s get the user base up! cmon sony price drop on da way! I hadn't heard whether it's true or not. Frankly, I was more than a little disappointed when I learned that Sony had discontinued BC. I have a 60 gig original w/ BC, and I have no reason to believe that my PS3 is going to give out any time soon, but with a huge PS2 library (many of which I still play regularly), it's always a little disheartening to see bridges burning. PS2s are still available, but the question is "for how long?" I'm hoping Sony makes it a regular part of every PS3 model once the prices come down to earth a little bit.

The graphics on the last gen systems were nothing to sneeze at and while I appreciate the marked improvement in graphics, AI, etc., I still thoroughly enjoy the classics and hope that more systems come to recognize the value and potential for customer loyalty by not forcing us to hock our old games for pennies on the dollar to get the newer stuff every time technology upgrades. BC is a big reason I've been loyal to Sony for the last decade, and part of the appeal of the Wii (to me) was its ability to play the GameCube games (though I never actually owned a GameCube, I did like a few of the games). I'm contemplating a new PS2 just to make sure that it is some time before I have to retire my PS2 library, which is why I'd much rather see Sony just make the BC standard in all PS3 systems some time shortly down the road than have to shelf a brand new PS2 for future use.
