Could be a few things. First of all, are you using a wireless router?

thats weird. my last firmware update was done in about 10 minutes tops. however there was aparticular update where i went online on my pc, dl-ed it to a flash drive and than copied to my ps3. that works just as well and u can find the links on the playstation.com.

However if you are running a wireless router i would strongly recommend to check your settings and see if you need to open any specifit ports to speed that up!

i've had mine for 3 months and i'm 21...........anyway it will probably take a long time if this is your first time updating your firmware. when i first got online it took an extremely long time to update so i just let it run while i was at class

On a wireless router several things can impact data transfer speed. #1 your internet should broadband or highspeed DLS, I dont know what kind of service you have but if you are somehow using dialup then the following wont apply. #2 distance from your router to the PS3 is key. Make sure the PS3 is well inside a 30 foot radius from your router, but the closer the better. #3 the router broadcast channel should be changed. You may be getting localized interference from other peoples routers broadcasting on the same channel. This usually is because most people dont bother to change the default. Go into the router admin and change the channel to 1 or 11. #4 make sure you have the latest firmware for your router. You should be able to find that in your router admin tools (find your routers IP address in network connections. enter that into the PC/mac web browser search bar to access the router admin). Go to the router manufactures site and see if you have the latest software for your model number. #5. Security. If you are using heavy security you may get some issues. I was using a WEP 128 bit encryption for a while and I had tons of stability issues. I switched to WPA2 and they went away.

when asking somebody a question regarding somethign they said earlier you should click the quote button under the thing they said that you want to reply to so that it is easy to differentiate what you are referencing....just a little tip if you plan to stick around the forums for a while

The dont even bother. Just step away from the machine and turn it off. If you cant figure out how to adjust the setting on a wireless router you should probably just go to an electronics store, buy an ethernet cable, and run it from your modem to your PS3.
