Official: Sony Is Planning To Launch PlayStation Phone

After several months of rumors, it has been confirmed that Sony is currently indeed working on the PlayStation Phone project to bring the power of a video game console to a mobile phone device. It has also been confirmed that Sony had already submitted an application for a mobile telecommunication device with video game functions to the U.S. Patents and Trademark Office.

If this isn't essentially PSP 2 then i dont see this ending well. Sony aren't in a position to be taking these kinds of risks again just yet. They need to focus on where they are strong right now (PS2 and PSP) and get the PS3 back up there before considering stuff like this.

So are you saying they should drop their TV and other electronic projects too? Sony is big I think they can handle it

I meant the gaming division. Sorry, i wasn't too clear there really.

Whilst i agree they probably could if they really needed to, just look at what the PS3 alone did to totalprofits.

Just like any new and innovative product there is an initial investment period where a company his minimal profit gains, if any. Sony is a mult-faceted, multi-talented company. This is a single minded forum. I'm sure Sony will be fine.

I think the reason would be because Apply-Ipod went into phone business with Iphone, Im no expert thought so dont flame.

So Sony got even more competition in that aspect. So making ALLINONE sounds like perfect plan.

I would like to:Watch movies,play games,listen to music,surf net,call people with just 1 device!

Anyway, what carrier would it be for? Sprint? T Mobile?

I would guess Sony Ericcson, which kind of sucks because I am very happy with my T-Mobile service.

It might work, butSony does have to offer some kind of online backup. Right now games for mobiles are only distributed electronically and there's no hard backup like a UMD or DVD. So in the event myphone gets lost/stolen I have to purchase the same games again. That's just plain ridiculous even if games are only a few bucks.

AFAIK, Sony erricson is just the make of the phone. The carrier could well be anything.

By the way, has this actually been confirmed? Because i read the article and as far as i could tell, it was just the Sony execs saying it would be a really good idea.

if sony ericsson makes the phone then the service would have to be at&t formerly known as cingular. All their phones are released only for at&t

This is NOT TRUE - there are several other carriers with Sony Ericsson phones (such as Centeniel and T-Mobile has had a few SE phones). However, Verizon, Sprint and Nextel is out - SE doesn't support that technology since they are a GSM / UMTS technology provider only (since a few years back).

Most likely - AT&T, if T-Mobile will ever want to make a splash they could try to get this exclusive. T-Mobile spent a few billions on spectrum not to long ago and will launch UMTS in that spectrum to try to compete.... I think the other carriers are all to small to go for this.

Disclaimer - if SE decides to revert the prior business decision and develop within the CDMA realm then of course other carriers would be an option, but this is highely unlikely

Well ppl, this is called company public image.

Nokia has made some crazy expensive 8800 series. Do you think many ppl would have used it? Nope! But that's a statementrather than a profitable project. It won't cost much to develope such a gadget but will help SONY to futher develop the PS brand into different market.

I would say PSPhone is low-risk considering SONY already has plenty of cell phone developing experience.

This is the first step towards integrating a phone into the PSP without screwing up that brand name / image. If they launched it with a phone and it sucked it would turn people away from the PSP. Do it under SE and then long-term upgrade the PSP or have a product that combines the whole thing into one - kind of smart actually.

Hopefully my SE shares will go up now :)
