I asked this a while ago aswell. from what I was told you don't really need to have played the others to enjoy it or understand it, But it will make you appreciate it more. If that makes sense? :P
I still haven't played it myself and the only MGS game I'ver ever played was MGS2, Which i loved even though i never played the first game. So it just depends on what experience you want.
oh and by the way,if you have a ps2 or a backwards compatible ps3 it is worth checking out the other games anyway!
EDIT: oops! sorry just remembered you only have a ps3! lol. But really the series is not to be missed, even if you only play one of the games. They really are as good as most people say judging my play of MGS2.
pretty much. you'll be able to get the main idea of whats going on. but like he said, you wont appreciate the series as much. Even if you played all before hand, i still dont think you would because most MGS fans grew up with the series for the past 10 - 20 yearsI asked this a while ago aswell. from what I was told you don't really need to have played the others to enjoy it or understand it, But it will make you appreciate it more. If you want to understand the series here is your answer: Go to Youtube and type in Metal Gear Solid Longplay, it has 2-3 hour video playthroughs of all Metal Gear Solid games with all of the cutscenes intactangusclone2ty for the info, i'm reliving my childhood rite now!

Yeah this guy said it all. I only played two of them the PSP version and the remake of the first one on my gamecube. But in the end I still enjoyed it, the cutscences were the best part, I used too try too rush through a part just too see the next cutscene. But you will find it hard too know whats going on at certin parts in the game, but you will still enjoy it.ty for the info, i'm reliving my childhood rite now![QUOTE="s1wel"][QUOTE="angusclone2"]yes, definitely buy it. what does "ty" mean?
ty means Thank YouPeople that say you'll understand the story are lying.
I was new to the series and MGS4, while moderately fun to play, had a pile of crap for a plot. I read the Wikipedia plot summaries and watched GameTrailers' plot summary for the series as well, and still got nothing meaninful out of MGS4's story. I've yet to talk to somebody who was entirely new to the series and hear them say, "Yeah, I thought the story was great".
Also, this might help a bit.

I have a to agree with him. though the story was a little understood, I was lost for a good portoin of it because I had no idea hat they were talking about especially during the mission briefs where they have tons of flashbacks...Also, I can never remember most of the characters that they mentioned...Like Vamp...Who is he...I'm still on act 2 so no spoilers please...However, I still find the story pretty epic :D I definitely recommend it even if you haven't played the otehrs because I haven't either, but it's still so fun...
Its an awesome game and yes you would prabably appreciate it more if you play the other titles but it isnt necesary.
the first MGS i played was Snake eater and its an awesome game, as for the story you can download a MGS encyclopedia or database whith all the descriptions and backgrounds.
so im just gonna take a guess and say you havent played the other games? They explain the whole plot in the game.
And the only part where playing MGS1 is useful is in act 4.

i just got mgs4 and i've never played another metal gear game, and it's now my favorite game ever. you can read up on wikipedia about the other games, takes 5 minutes. but the gameplay and the clipscenes are better than any game or movie you've seen, and the graphics, and gameplay, it's a perfect 10 to me, loved it, go buy itncderek
Same here, never played previous games in the series and had no trouble understanding what was going on. Very few games make me feel as though they are worth every penny and MGS4 made me feel like $60 was a bargain. I think it's now $50 so I would definitely recommend picking this up.
BTW the PS3 is also my first SONY console and couldn't be happier with it.
