Is MGS4 worth it if I haven't played the other ones?

I asked this a while ago aswell. from what I was told you don't really need to have played the others to enjoy it or understand it, But it will make you appreciate it more. If that makes sense? :P

I still haven't played it myself and the only MGS game I'ver ever played was MGS2, Which i loved even though i never played the first game. So it just depends on what experience you want.

oh and by the way,if you have a ps2 or a backwards compatible ps3 it is worth checking out the other games anyway!

EDIT: oops! sorry just remembered you only have a ps3! lol. But really the series is not to be missed, even if you only play one of the games. They really are as good as most people say judging my play of MGS2.

pretty much. you'll be able to get the main idea of whats going on. but like he said, you wont appreciate the series as much. Even if you played all before hand, i still dont think you would because most MGS fans grew up with the series for the past 10 - 20 years

i didn't play much of the prior installations before MGS4. I loved the game and the story is fantastic. I only recommend that you skip the scenes when Snake is back on the plane. They are long and filled with too much backstory. Even if you never played the others, by the end of MGS4 you will see just how great the game is and just how well done it is for fans of the series. There is nothing like it.

yes, definitely buy it. If you want to understand the series here is your answer: Go to Youtube and type in Metal Gear Solid Longplay, it has 2-3 hour video playthroughs of all Metal Gear Solid games with all of the cutscenes intact

Nahhh, do you think he is going to feel goosebumps on the final batlle if he dont know the story, of that amazing nostalgia feeling on chapter 4??? sure he will find that MGS 4 is a good game with the best quality standards, but wont get that emotional feeling if he dont play the others first

in my opinion dude the emotional charge that the games before have been putting into the game makes the mgs4 expierience so much better
if wouldnt have played mgs1 n mgs2, mgs4 would have been a great game but not a perfect game
the tears i dropped for snake wouldnt be there if i hadent played the other games

even if you havent played the other ones you'll probably still like it because the gameplay itself is fun, but playing the other ones is essential to understanding whats going on

I've said this before. There is absolutely NO excuse to not play MGS4. It is a masterpiece and shouldn't be missed by anyone, no matter what.

Yeah this guy said it all. I only played two of them the PSP version and the remake of the first one on my gamecube. But in the end I still enjoyed it, the cutscences were the best part, I used too try too rush through a part just too see the next cutscene. But you will find it hard too know whats going on at certin parts in the game, but you will still enjoy it.

They explain the whole plot in the game.

And the only part where playing MGS1 is useful is in act 4.

People that say you'll understand the story are lying.

I was new to the series and MGS4, while moderately fun to play, had a pile of crap for a plot. I read the Wikipedia plot summaries and watched GameTrailers' plot summary for the series as well, and still got nothing meaninful out of MGS4's story. I've yet to talk to somebody who was entirely new to the series and hear them say, "Yeah, I thought the story was great".

Also, this might help a bit.

Yes, it's a gr8 game and you'll understand everything b/c it's pretty much self explanatory what happened in previous titles. I haven't played any mgs b4 and after beating this one understood everything.

I have a to agree with him. though the story was a little understood, I was lost for a good portoin of it because I had no idea hat they were talking about especially during the mission briefs where they have tons of flashbacks...Also, I can never remember most of the characters that they mentioned...Like Vamp...Who is he...I'm still on act 2 so no spoilers please...However, I still find the story pretty epic :D I definitely recommend it even if you haven't played the otehrs because I haven't either, but it's still so fun...

Ok n mgs1 u play as snake ur n alaska to find and destroy a super tank "metal gear Rex" and kill your twin brother liquidsnake during the story u meet Ocelot after the fight with ocelot he gets his hand chopped off by a ninja(play the game to find out the rest) later on u kill liquid the end. on mgs2 you go to a base controlled by a organization named "the patriots" they control the U.S and were using the base to develope deadly weapons and destroy another another bigger metal gear. In the middle of it you find ocelot from mgs1. He had surgery on his missing arm and used liquids arm to replace it. He gets possessed by liquid and u also meet another character named Olga gurlocovich who's pregnant during that you fight the metal gear and snake loses. U play as Raiden( a ninja) and you find another twin snake named solidus and he kidnaps the president u kill solidus and " Liquid ocelot" escapes. mgs3 is a prequel ur Solid Snake ( the father of mgs1 snake, liquid, and solidus). But they're clones I won't say anything cuz it's a prequel. In mgs4 it answers alot of questions I didn't tell you this is just the basic story

Vamp is basicly a test subject 4 nanomachines. He's not really a vampire but he can never die because the nanomachines in his body keep him barely alive

i just got mgs4 and i've never played another metal gear game, and it's now my favorite game ever. you can read up on wikipedia about the other games, takes 5 minutes. but the gameplay and the clipscenes are better than any game or movie you've seen, and the graphics, and gameplay, it's a perfect 10 to me, loved it, go buy it

Its an awesome game and yes you would prabably appreciate it more if you play the other titles but it isnt necesary.

the first MGS i played was Snake eater and its an awesome game, as for the story you can download a MGS encyclopedia or database whith all the descriptions and backgrounds.

Same here, never played previous games in the series and had no trouble understanding what was going on. Very few games make me feel as though they are worth every penny and MGS4 made me feel like $60 was a bargain. I think it's now $50 so I would definitely recommend picking this up.

BTW the PS3 is also my first SONY console and couldn't be happier with it.

yes, I have never played a MGS game other than 4 and it may have been the best game I have ever played. The story will not completely make sense but you will get the most important points and feel connected to all the characters.
