quite simply, as you need a software to read images, music, video, since there's nothing of this on the PS4 yes they did that on purpose

You can use a USB to upgrade the HDD by putting the latest update on it in the correct way.

You need to format the USB flash drive to FAT32 first before it will work.

IDK, but I've noticed there's always things to learn with each PS.

Thanks everyone for their replies I really appreciate it. Come to think of it, early on in the life cycle of the PS3 the console didnt read USB contents, whether it be music or movies either but they later added that feature. Hopefully this feature will be added to the PS4 in a later update. Hopefully sooner than later.
