The 40 gig is a very stripped down version where the 60 and 80 gig's are the better SKU's.

The 40gb is the stripped down version. I don't think its worth the $400 but if I were you, I would ask or get the 80gb and the 60gb if you can still find the 60.

is this the only difference between the 40gb and 80gb consoles? I'm getting a 40gb tomorrow morning and don't care about the BC.

Well besides the 40 gig difference in hard drive space the 40 gig doesnt have the media card readers like the 80 gig and it has 2 less usb ports. Nothing that will really impact your gaming experience, though they are helpful.

ya the 2 less usb's is going to suck cause i could see myself using them, i'm not really sure what i'd use the media card reader for, so i guess it's not that big of a deal. thanks for the info

Lol, there's no more 60 gig for sale because they're not manufacturing that model anymore. There are only the 40 gig which has NO PS2 BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY whatsoever. The 80 gig which replaces the 60 gig or so they say, now uses an emulator to play PS2 games, which only plays about 85% or so PS2 games, while the 60 gig model plays almost 100% of PS2 games because it has the PS2 chip installed in it. All of the PS3 consoles have FULL PS1 backwards compatibility. Therefore if you wanted the PS3 for its better features, then the 80 gig would be your best bet. Unless you want the 60 gig, you will have to search a whole lot to get one, most likely EBAY and such.

Um you can still go online and download the free emulator software. You all do know that, right? So yes you can at least play most of the PS2 games on the 40GB system, just need the free software. It is available at the Playstation Store online.

No it does not. But for some reason on the back of the 40gb, it says backward compatibility is limited. I think the reason it says that is because of the PSN downloadable games.

Um, yes there is an emulator. Just go to the playstation store. Go to "view all" Go to the letter P then go to the second page where it says "PS2 system data". And its description says " PS2 system data allows Playstation2 format software requiring hard disk installation to be played on the playstation 3" It was released on December 15th, 2006. And again, it is FREE!!! Please if i am wrong, explain how that isn't the emulator.

... No. Just no. That's for ps2 games like FFXI and Socom that require either the hard drive and ethernet adapter. Do you really expect a software emulator for the ps2 to be 6mb? Do you have a 40gb? Are you using it to play ps2 games? STOP LYING TO PEOPLE.
