Game consoles use RAM more efficiently than PC's. PC's need a reserve of RAM to perform operations in the background for the operating system. For the most part, this isn't an issue for gaming consoles.

Yes, and it runs the RAM faster. You can run Crysis on medium settings maybe high if its optimized very well. You wount get Max setting though. Go to system wars man, we need smart poeple like you to put the fanboys in their place.

Always remember that RAM is a substitue for use of the HDD because it is MUCH faster and efficent to move data around. The HDD is too slow. That is why you can set a marker on your HDD to act as RAM in the case of RAM running low.... in other words: virtual memory. It is easier to access memory at any time if you're accessing it from RAM instead of the HDD.

PS3 came out 7 years ago. Back in 2005, most gaming PCs had less than 512mb of ram.

Memory:
  • 256MB XDR Main RAM @3.2GHz
  • 256MB GDDR3 VRAM @700MHz

System Bandwidth:

  • Main RAM: 25.6GB/s
  • VRAM: 22.4GB/s
  • RSX: 20GB/s (write) + 15GB/s (read)
  • SB: 2.5GB/s (write) + 2.5GB/s (read)

judas-savior

To put the above info in a simple form. The GPU (RSX) couldnt Read/Write more than 22.4 GB/s of bandwidth, while for the XDRRAM (Physical RAM) for the CELL B.E couldnt Read/Write more than 25.6GB/s. Those values are theoretical values or estimates because you can simply calculate them based on the RAM's clock rate and its Bus width. Note that for accessing the XDR RAM, the GPU has 20GB/s Write and 15GB/s Read speeds. Now all you have to do is go back to 2006-05 and search for RAMs used during that time and compare there speeds to a console used till now.

256 MB of RAM. The Xbox 360 has 512MB of RAM. This is why the PS3 has difficulties with some ports of games. The playstation version of The elder scriolls Skyrim is an axample of this problem with the amount of RAM of PS3.
