I found this on the net. A console failure rate done by SquareTrade. An interesting read related to my poll.

60GB, near launch (not ure about exact date), and still going strong. Gotta love Sony! My PS2 lasted from near launch to a little after the launch of the PS3 (hence prompting me to buy the PS3.....I smell conspiracy! j/k)
I voted over three years and still running. casue mine did last over three years, Unfortunately it broke last week. Even worse is i wont have any money to buy a new one for a while as schools starting :(
oh yeah it was the FAT 60GB. i wish they still made them....
My old 60gb which i still have from launch. Got the YLoD on March 29th. Fixed a few days later last almost 5 months Then died again. Now i have a 250gb ps3 and everything is better lol. By the way i had to fix my 60gb again to get my game out lol. its currently working right now.
no ylod it was dre. Sorry ass infamous wanna be game killed it. I dont even know the name my little cousin was playing it.
1.8 year.
Same happened to my sons ps3 approx. 3yrs & 2 days. I've been in touch with Consumers direct & they advised me to write to the store I bought it from stating the PS3 is not fit for its purpose & that I wish to reject the PS3 & claim a refund. Check out Consumers direct on the web as you have rights under The Sale Of Goods Act 1979. Sony did quote that the Ps3 would be an investment for many many years to come...... I've only just sent my letter so I'll keep the site updated. Good luck!kelmcdThis is relevant. :D
I got my Fat 60GB model in early 2007 then it YLOD during the summer of 2009, so around 2.5 years. Sent it in to Sony and they gave me a refurbed fat 60GB model, then it YLOD again the first 4 months >:( I went without a PS3 for a few months and finally decided to get the slim.
My fat 80gb gave up about 3 days after my year's warranty...about 2 days ago -.-
I got the Red Screen of Death =/ I don't have a clue what to do now...
i have the 80 gb bc since 2008 its running fine but i hear the fan geting lounder and lounder not sure if it something i need to worry bout or not
got a refurbished 60 gig in feb 07, upgraded hdd to a 500gig and still going strong. I game on it about 2-3 hours a day for about 5 days.
My original 60gb beauty was a launch unit that I paid over $800 for. (Yes, I know...) Got it on eBay brand new when they were super hard to find and cost a fortune --if you did find one outside of a retail store.
It lasted me from U.S. launch (November 2006 - April 2010)and I was devasted to see it go.
But my refurbed 60gb replacement runs so much quieter and rarely locks up. I just hated to part with the $180 as I feel that 60gig systems should have been covered under an extended warranty.
Sony is certainly aware of the higher than normal failure rates of this specific system (60gig).
Had the original launch 60 GB, it lasted for about 2 years. Then the laser went out that switches from the DVD to Blu-Ray. Went for about another 2 years and I just got the YLOD a month ago. So I sent it into Sony and they do a exchange for a 120GB Slim for $150. :) But the crappy part..... I lost all my oblivion, dragon age and red dead game data. Call of Duty takes to seconds to beat so no sweat on that lol.

I lost 5 level 141 characters in Sacred 2, my WipeoutHD save (thank god I just unlocked the platinum by then), two dragon age level 20 characters, an almost complete final fantasy 7; 8 and 9 save . I was really ...
I got a 60GB in 2007, upgraded the hard drive a year and a bit ago and it's still running fine. It does sound like it's struggling sometimes on Mafia II though :S
