Well obviously today if games are to be taken seriously by most they have to be as realistic as can be but what do you think?

It depends on how "real" the game is. When games are to real I get annoyed with them and the best example is Operation Flashpoint where if you got shot once you were dead or when you got shot in the leg you had to bandage yourself up and wait for the medic. that was just extremely annoying. As long as it's not like that i'll take minor realism over arcade style
yes with this gen , realism is a need i guess so. it helps in telling a story in a better way and giving a better experience at the game play.
Of course the stock answer that I subscribe to is "gameplay first".
But to answer the specific question: Not very. I would say I value "style" more than realism when it comes to the graphical dimension of a game. Take games like Bloodborne, Okami, or Mario Galaxy - none of these games are "realistic", but they all have striking and amazing style. That's the fun of it and helps bring you to a NEW world. Now - if the goal of the game is something like Battlefield, then more realistic takes precedence over stylization because that's what people are looking for, sure. But I'm drawn more to stylish and unique artistry.
@hyksiu: When you say "realistic" I assume you're referring to the art style (read: graphics).
For me, I prefer stylized games. Not because I think that they look better, but rather, they tend to age better. Example:
Now, that's not accounting for story (which can totally sway my vote). But if it comes down to realism vs stylized. I'll go stylized every time.
Realism is pretty boring to me and weird enough, most realistic game are pretty much all shooter and GTA. I prefer artistic style and an unrealistic world with its own rules.
How important is realism in games for you?
not so.it's just what presentation is all about,to prove that the console is capable of portraying reality in a box.
I think that realism has greatly detracted from the appeal of gaming, not only visually but in function as well. Take for example The Need for Speed, the original one on the PlayStation, it's an ugly game, it plays completely unrealistically but that is all a part of its appeal and fun, it's a game. Old games were restricted by the technology of the time and that made realism extremely hard to replicate, I am sure they were shooting for it but it just wasn't something possible at the time so you just had these over the top silly games. I think that is the staple of 90's - early 00's gaming, why its so iconic, memorable and has such a strong lasting effect, that's just not something we see much anymore.
Realistic graphics and Realism in games is somewhat important in games to me. But there are games that it doesn't matter much, Like Goat Simulator which is just meant to be "big Dumb Fun"
Depends on the genre, Sometimes you just want a fun platformer with a Blue Hedgehog or a Plumber, But in other times you want a realistic approach to a game. So for me it depends on the genre and mood that supports the premise of the game.
I am advertising an epic game called "Need For Madness".
I'ts a racing game where you either have to complete the laps faster than the CPU or demolish all of your enemies before they finish. It's 3D & third person.
If you download it, you can even create your own tracks and cars or what ever you think you can make. You can also show off your creations in multiplayer.
It's RADICAL!
