If I remember right: Turn of the PS3, turn it on again and hold the ON-button until you see the PS3 on your TV.

Go under display settings. Change it to composite, hdmi, component or whatever you have

That's pretty much right. I don't think you have to turn the main switch in the back on and off. Hold the power/reset button on the front for a few seconds and your system should beep a few times. After that, the display settings will default back to 480i and change to whatever resolution your tv can handle if your system is connected via HDMI. If that doesn't work, try turning the main switch off and back on and then repeating.

I've done this turning on and of the ps3 and recalebrating the hdmi cable through the ps3and still have the same problem. I'm sending both the video and audio through a HDMI cable from my PS3 to my 32'' Sharp Aquos (LC32D626), it's the 1080p so should suport the blue-ray dvd I'm trying to play. I'm recieveing a message reading "received an incompatible signal check the out signal" it's possible it's the tv not functioning propperly but a

I have played Assassin's creed and it works (but the tv converts it to 720p, as the game is not made for 1080p, as stated on the game info) would there be some problem with the 1080 setting on the TV that I might have to change.
