depends on your impact and where the ball will land, but for the most part you have to do the super spin shot, which is holding up when the meter goes up and holding down when the meter goes down (for a super backspin). Do the opposite for the forward spin. you can also get it sometimes by just doing it the old school way of just holding down or up while swinging, but the super spin shots get it the most often.

But...when I do it sometimes I do a shot with a blue ray and sometimes with a nice sound when I hit and a violet ray.
