HDMI to DVI??? Still need audio

I've thought about getting a ps3 but i don't have HDMI just DVI, so I was wondering if i use a hdmi to dvi cable (or adapter) am i still able to us the regular analog audio out of the av port of the ps3. I don't have a system that has an optical port so just wondering if its possible??

HDMI transfers sound and video, DVI just does video, so you have to find another way to do the sound

I use the audio connectors on the component cable that came with the PS3 and don't plug in the video connector.

If you looking for HDMI quality sound and you have a receiver that supports it, get a digital optical cable for sound.

right. dvi will give you the same picture quality as hdmi. for audio, you have 2 options. you can connect the white and red analog cables that came with the ps3 for basic sound quality, or for digital surround you can connect an optical audio cable to your dd/dts receiver.

I've got HDMI/DVI for my picture and I use the red and white PS3 audio cables and plug them into my home theatre system. Works great!

If you are using a DVI connection on a TV and want to use HD with a PS3 you can use an HDMI to DVI cable and then use the red and white cables for the audio. Configure the Ps3 for HDMI then change the sound settings to allow for the white and red audio connections. Start by plugging in the HDMI to DVI and RCA output cables on the PS3. Reset the PS3 then allow the system to change to HD then go back into the sound settings and change to RCA white and red analog. DVI doesn't support sound like HDMI.

my benq e2200 hd monitor has hdmi port which i connect the ps3 (i.e. via hdmi) and for the sound there is headphone jack in the monitor itself frowm which i get the audio.

You can use the red/white cables for audio, but just make sure your monitor/TV supports HDCP over DVI.

am i the only one that gets annoyed with people saying "red and white cables?" they're called composite audio cables.. when you go in to buy cables do your salesman a favor and know what they're called..

No your not the only one, it annoys me as well. Its like calling HDMI cables, "those cables from the amp to the TV".

Yes you can use the composite as well along with the HDMI to DVI conversion. Also if you need to go the extra mile you can get a composite audio to 3.5m conversion.

A lot of time people get confused between composite and component, so I call them by their colors to avoid confusion.
