You stole my answer. Kingdoms Of Amalur is definitely your best bet. In my opinion Amalur is one of the best gems of 2012. It would have won tons of GOTY awards if more people had actually bought it. The combat in Amalur is better then the combat in Skyrim. It almost like the combat of God Of War put into a massive open world RPG. The character creation tools are really cool too. You can put a piercings or a tattoo on your characters face to make them look like a real badass.

dark souls and demon souls is nothing like skyrim i don't know what you're talking about. i swear it seems like souls fans take any excuse to bring up these games lol.

and yeah kingdoms of amalur is probably most like it other than fallout and oblivion. the art style is more cartoonish though and the battle system is much more fun.

Kingdoms of Amalur is basically Skyrim with a different art style.

Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas are similar only with guns instead of spells and an emphasis on post nuclear war. So it is kind of futuristic compared to Elder Scrolls.

I saw some people mentioning Far Cry 3 and where as I love the game in all its modes so far, it is nothing like ES games, neither is Kingdoms of Amalur,

Dark Souls, or most of the other games mentioned.....

I really loved Morrowind and Oblivion, but I feel that Skyrim was pretty bad in general comparison.

I would put Venetica, DC Universe Online, maybe even Dragon Age Origins I or II in the same category as Kingdoms of Amalur and Dark Souls. Maybe throw in Lord of the Rings War in the North, Dungeon Siege III, White Knight Chronicles I and II and Dragons Dogma too.

However I added Two Worlds because it is pretty much a generic version of ES especially Two Worlds 2. That is about as close as it gets in my opinion. If your looking for stealth, and the ability to steal items level up have an inventory and have different guilds with a ton of side quests and non linear gamepath.

ALL of the games I mentioned in this post are good games if your just looking for something in the general ball park though, and I do see where the other posts are relevant.

Oblivion and Morrowind are both better games imo. (don't get me wrong, I had a 428 hour love affair with Skyrim) Not only are they "like" ES games, they actually happen to BE ES games. If you've already played them, then Kingdoms is definitely worth a go.

Dead Island is a bit of a wild card choice. It's free roam but not as immersive.

Dead Rising 2 is another alternative. Also.. Batman: Arkham City and Rage.

Far Cry 3, Arkham City, Kingdom of Amalur, Dragon's Dogma (kinda....no fast travel) Oblivion, Dead Island.
