I know there have been firmware updates..but is this possible yet? I have a 1080 set which is the native resolution, problem is most games are 720p and everytime I boot up a game it forces my TV to switch to 720p mode. Since my native res is 1080, it does not look as good.Is there anyway to correct this yet?
Thanks

Ugh. you people amaze. If the game is 720 (like most are) it CANNOT be played higher, even if your Tv is 1080. Most newer Tv's will set the appropiate resolution needed.I am unaware of a TV the Upscales games.

Xbox 360 does it (I have one) you set your res in the preferences, say 1080i, and everything scales to that. Even 720p games.
Problem is 720p looks great IF it is your native (Highest) resolution. If you have a native 1080 TV it typically will rescale 720 and not look as good (similair to how SD content and channels scale on an HD set)This was not a problem until I realized that now 90% of PS3 games are coming out in 720p. So I am hoping there is a fix...any ideas?

its simple really.. go to display settings and set up your display.. but instead of selecting auto, pick the custom option... and then have the 1080 box being the only one selected (besides 480p) which is going to be automatically selected... however the game wont display in 1080 if it doesn't have that output.. so i find myself constantly changing the settings when i change from COD4 to.. something that only supports 720p output... but whatever the games still look good either way..

I have a 1080i and if something is produced in a native resolution below this it always looks better at the lower resolution. Really a 720p resolution is just as good or better than 1080i. The 1080i resolution that the 360 is displaying is NOT a true 1080 resolution but instead it's just an emulated resolution.

i got a problem myself....

i have a couple games with a maximum output at 1080i along with 720p.

My tv is a 1080i tv so why not run it at 1080i right. so my custom display setting is set to all of them except 1080p.

when i stick in the games with 1080i output my tv only displays it at 720p...

i dont really care that much cuz they probs both look great but i think they use to run at 1080i and all of a sudden it changed to 720p

is it the ps3 or my tv thats being gay?....any solutions?

it is but not for that price. i picked up a 32" 1080p vizio at costco for about $100 less ($559). http://www.vizio.com/productDetails.aspx?id=2634&pid=1506

you can find similar deals on it going on in local markets. the sale i got it on was for black friday in the us, but after new years there is usually great sales as well due to stores trying to empty out their stocks for spring line

Yikes! A CRT? Don't get me wrong. I have a Toshiba 36" HD CRT but the thing is heavy! Sounds pretty expensive too. since you can get a nice 42" Samsung LCD in Canada for about $700 US. My toshiba CRT was $3000 when I got it and I can't give it away these days!

The Crt wil suit you better for watching Std TV broadcasting on widescreen. If you plan on going all out High Def, I would highly reccomend a flat panel of some sort.

i hear people say this all the time, but honestly anytime i play a game in 720 it's honestly horrible, i have to have my games run in 1080, for instance gta iv runs natively in 720, but you untick the option for it and it runs in 1080 and looks amazing, the ratchet games are harder to notice the difference, yet i think it still looks better in 1080, what kind of tv do you have that looks better in 720?

if you deselect all other resolutions it will force the game to upscale to whichever you picked...

I have a Sony Bravia 32 inch and the 720 looks better on this set. It wasn't cheap when I bought it paid a premium price but then it does come down to what you pay for is what you get.

Here is what you need to know. 720p and 1080i are basically the same resolution. the p stands for progressive, meaning it scans every line of resolution and the i stands for interlaced, meaning that it scans every other line of resolution on the tv. Basically there should not be a great difference between games in 720p and 1080i. The only way to truly have a better picture would be to play in 1080p and that is only currently possible though blu ray.

the bigger the screen the more you can notice the diffrence between 720 and 1080. i run through a projector and 720 looks pathetic. and all those saying 720 looks better are full of it. 720 = 720 vertical lines. 1080 = 1080 vertical lines. fact is all games should run at 1080p thexbox can do it so why dont the ps3?it sucks cause id much rather play online games on the ps3 but if i can get the same game running at 1080 on the xbox its a no brainer. my friend has a 42 inch and 720 looks fine but my screen is about 5m across and the difference brtween the two is massive.

Most people just don't get it and have no clue what there asking for. (sorry TC) Why does it matter? If you have a high quality Tv it won't matter what resolution the source is at. If your picture is sub-par get a new set.

What are you talking about. theres a huge difference between 1080i and 720. my 720p games look rubbish to compared to such games as KZ2 and mgs4 at 1080.and the sooner the ps3 gets a update to upscale all games the better. If the 360 can do it why not ps3

well actually 720p should be better then 1080i as 720p is refreshing twice as fast then 1080i (basically 720p would be 1440i lol)

720p isbasically1440i, which is higher than 1080. Also, 720p, makes movement look a lot better, so unless your playing, "Stand in one Place", 720p is slightly better

720p is by far the best for fast motion, which unless your playing a TBRPG, :P your most likely going to have in a game. 720p > 1080i. Btw, epic thread bump...
