Dunno about Portable Ops or the Acid games as I never played any of those... For your first play through of the MGS games I would recommend just playing in order of release MGS1 > MGS2 > MGS3 > MGS4 > MGSPW > MGR:R (I guess) When I go back and play through the series I play it chronologically, but recently I've been skipping MGS1.. I love that game to death, it is probably the game I have completed the most amount of times.... But it is just sooo sooo dated at this point it just got harder and harder to play.

I recently tried to play metal gear solid 2 and it was just impossible. The controls are terrible, the level design is really outdated, the tight corridors become a huge pain, etc. I completed the first metal gear solid and even though metal gear solid 2 is really similar I was expecting it be be a bit more fluid but its the opposite. I'm still playing through metal gear solid 2 because of the story but I feel I might just skip it and try metal gear solid 3. I can see why these games were so praised 10 years ago but they have aged poorly.

Order of release is best. It would be very jarring playing Peace Walker HD then going back to MGS1 because of the vast difference in controls.

Play them in the order they were released, that is how it was intended.

Yes, but even playing the story in the order they are released would be more fun than playing chronologically.

Chronologically, you'd be playing MGS3. Not for its story, but because it's the only way you can play Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. Those games are boring though, so you'd be looking at MGS3 first, Portable Ops, Peace Walker, MGS1, MGS2, MGS4. Just play them by order of release.

I don't think the Acid games and Portable Ops really need to be played as they're not part of the official canon, they're sort of spin offs.

Portable Ops is definitely cannon, and it's actually a decent game. I was bummed to see they didn't put it in the HD collection. Also, playing the first two MGS games may feel kind of awkward, so if they turn you off, by all means, get the story from YouTube or something. DO NOT skip to MGS3 without knowing every little detail about MGS1 and 2. So much of the greatness in MGS3, PW, and 4 will be completely lost on you, if you do.

I forget, which ones does that have in it?  I still need to play the PSP ones.  There is a story related to everything in Portable ops right?  Doesnt that game suck?  I am sad to have to play it :P.

Metal Gear Legacy Collection Includes MG & MG2 (via MGS3), MGS, MGS: VR Missions, MGS, MGS2, MGS3, MGS4, MGS: Peace Walker. No Portable Ops. I actually enjoyed Portable Ops, though it does fall short of MGS standards. As for story, it follows Big Boss immediately after MGS3, tells you what happens to the Philosopher's Legacy, shows Big Boss's first interactions with Frank Yaeger, and a bit more. But overall, it's a bit light on the story and certainly not essential to the series. I still would have liked to see it included though.
