So the other day I bought a PS3 from Facebook Marketplace. The guy said it was original, and he bought on launch. So I thought it was the 60GB. I paid him $60; which I thought was a pretty good deal.

Turns out when I got it home and looked at it in more detail, it was actually the 80GB model; which I'm fine with because it still plays PS2 games and is a little more reliable.

The warranty sticker was removed, and the HDD screw was stripped. So I think he stripped it trying to replace it, thus the reason he had a PS3 slim for sale too, (what I think he bought when he couldn't get the HDD out of the 80GB)

So my question is, the PS3 works, isn't very loud, but does get warm/hot after not much play time.

Should I go ahead and replace the thermal paste on the CPU/GPU? If so what thermal paste is best?

I don't plan on playing it all the time, just an occasional ps2 game from time to time.

You need to take the IHS off both chips, get some kryonaut on them. Secondly there was a 80GB PS3 which had crummy software based BC. The 60GB was the only decent one at doing it, google the CECH number to find out.

I delid all the PS3s I owned and end up being super quiet, also had the 17/19 blade fans.

@Star67@Random_Matt Yeah I had the 60GB version back in the day. I bought it used shortly after the PS3 came out because they had already switched over to software emulation. Had to have been withing a few months.

Sadly it overheated and died.

So yeah attention should be given to the thermal solution before you start using it for real.

I'm in the UK, so there are third party companies that sell spare parts. I'll assume there must be some in the US, or you can scour ebay where there should be some sellers.

Just what the 19 blade looks like, did not find any on ebay.com, only the 17 blade one.

Although, I do not know what fans that model comes with, you will have to look. It may be one of the better ones anyway.

Taking the IHS off, Sony used thermal paste between the die and heatspreader. That paste was shit to begin with and will be like dust by now. Tricky procedure though, will need to use pallette knive.

You lucky you found one that works at all. The one I bought from some seller who listed the item as working condition didn't work. You could try taking it to a local repair shop. They might be able to fix it up.

@Random_Matt: Gotcha. I did that with my original 60 gig ps3, it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be.

First time I did not use a palette knife and broke it, there on after it was easy. Hair dryer to loosen the adhesive and glide straight through.

I know, they are getting harder and harder to find. I dont think the seller knew what they had, but I didn't want to pay more than $60 for it because for one it's over 10 years old, and I had a feeling it would need some maintenance.

I'll go to my local computer repair shop to get some thermal paste and maybe they will have that plastic scrape tool to get the old paste off.
