I am about to get PS+ and all those free games and I want to be able to fit them all on the hard drive so I don't have to re-download anything whenever I want to play it. Just want to know some opinions on what size and brand I should get, since I know very little about this stuff. I don't want to buy something and find out it isn't compatible for whatever reason.

You can never go wrong with Western Digital although all hdd are really the same, just different name brands. As long as it is a SATA laptop hard drive (7200 RPM) then you should be fine. You could go with an SSD (that's what I have in my PS3) but they are super expensive and generally aren't work it just for your PS3. 500 GB to 1 TB is generally enough space to fit everything PSN has to offer plus games you purchase from stores that require hard drive install.

It's better to get a 5200rpm hard drive because they spin a little slower, BUT generate less heat, which is important for a game console since it's in such a confined space. Personally, I have a 500GB 5200rpm Western Digital and have zero issues with it.

I'm think you mean 5400 RPM for a hard drive and you are correct in your assessment in regards to less heat with a hdd that has a lower RPM. However, that also means the PS3 will access data slower.

Thanks for the advice. Seagate has a 1TB model that is only $20 more than a 500GB one. Wondering if I should get that, although 1TB seems like overkill.

I replaced my 20GB HDD with a Fujitsu 500GB HDD.....no issues at all. I have tons of music and all my games installed. I still have 340GB of space. :D

If using internal, just be sure you have the right thickness. notebook HDD's have two different thicknesses. Generally anything in the 1Terrabyte range isn't going to fit in the PS3. I believe 9.5mm is your limit. The bigger drives are 12.5 mm.

Any 2.5 inch SATA 5400 RPM. Beit Sea Gate, Samsung, or Western Digital etc. I have 500GB in my 2 PS3s and have never used even half of them since the PS3 came out.

This.

I have two 500GB Western Digital 2.5 SATA drives on my two PS3's and they are both factory manual recommended. I do suggest 5400rpm speed.

Also, Seagate Momentus is a good company.
