Hey,

I have decided to get a PS3, even thought I do have a PS4, I would like to be able to play older games, and play with my friends. I have found a used PS3 slim, and have got a really good deal, but the PS3 only has 120gb storage. I want to upgrade, so I am going to replace it with a 500gb hard drive. I already know how to do the physical hard drive replacement, but I'm just confused on the Software side of it. If I just outright take one drive out, and replace it with a new one, will I get a brand new software, with no profiles or anything, or would I have to do something?

Thanks

Hello,

If you have nothing to backup then essentially you will not need to use the internal backup software on the PS3.

Just in case: https://www.playstation.com/en-gb/get-help/help-library/system---hardware/storage---data/create-backup-files-stored-on-the-playstation-3-hdd-using-the-ba/

You do have to download the latest OS software:

https://www.playstation.com/en-gb/get-help/ps3-system-software/

This will give you the latest OS. Once you boot up the system and update the software via a USB stick you'll then log in as normal. Your psn profile/trophies are saved on the server side but I don't envision you having any PS3 trophies yet since you just purchased the console.

In the event that you have any other questions about the physical upgrade:

Hope this helps.
