The 60 gig will be replaced by the 80 gig and there is not even a hint of Sony releaseing a 40 gig version, all the rumurs of the 40 gig PS3 was started by someone that had no idea of what Sony was doing. I think I saw something where M$ was saying that they should release a 40 gig version but it has never come from Sony.

So sony should keep the $600 price tag just to make current/previous owners happy? LOL...
They already sold most of them out so? Either way, drop price and sell, stay the same and sell. It equals to one thing. Its Why Sony took collateral or loan from the PS2 or something? To sell no matter what, and at whatever price it takes to.
Sony themselves obviously know that with a cheaper price, more americans with a small entertainment budget will invest into a godly ps3. They saw themselves, on how 200% of 60gb models sold when they dropped it to 500$. Theyll keep it at 500 til it totally sells out, just how gamespot/ebgames sell the 20gb for 450$. Once the 60gb is totally gone, the 80gb will go down to 500$, and most likely a 100+gb model with warhawk or killzone2 ..or some hot exclusive will be bundled..or maybe even home pre installed...
But, as far as I've seen, with sony selling the cell to toshiba, and trying to make each chip as small as possible, they just might be able to afford a 400$ model, which, honestly, is just as expensive as an x360, which would sell through the roof when the games everyone wants comes out
Basedon Sony's own comments,the 60GB will go the same way of the 20GB...extinction. By Christmas, I do think that Sony will drop the 80GB to $499 to compete with the Elite and introduce a 40GB (or something close) at $399. Otherwise, if Sonygoes into the holidays with only a $599 price point,sales will be dismal at best. I have not yet bought my PS3 b/c it is just a matter of time before the price drops.
