I only have 3 games installed. Warhawk, RS:Vegas 2, and GTA:IV..and now I'm down to 22 gigs of storage left. Whats eating up all the space? I know the drive is seen as 37 gig, but all my games combined only equal around 10 gigs. What is eating up the rest? Is it the PS3 updates/OS?

I know we can upgrade our HD's, but I was really hoping not to. I thought for sure 40 gig would be enough, as I never even filled my 20 on my 360.

Yea i hav a 40 and i'm not really concerned over space i hav heaps of songs vids, pics and about 5 demos (not includin haze which is not on the flippin store. WHY!??!) plus 4 games: gta4, cod4, ac, motorstorm. I think (lol i jst switched my ps3 off) i hav bout 15 gb left and i wouldnt b wantin 2 upgrade to a 180 gb hdd anytime soon. Dnt b so concerned with the lack of space.

P.S: PS3 updates dont take up much space especially out of 40gb!

I have a 60 gig with about 18 left. If you start to run oput of space you could always delete some things you don't need/watch/play.

Its not a huge deal, but I really thought a 40 gig would go farther. If I had a library as large as my 360's....I'd be out of luck.

Oh well, I guess I'll just go pick up a 120gb or so sometime in the next month. Might as well get prepared for the flood of games this year :)

Well, thanks to another member on here...he found a pretty good deal for us suffering with the 40 :)

I just placed the order, so I think I'll soon be worry free with this 160gb. And for $69, can't go wrong!

im deciding on buying a PS3. would 40 gig be too small? cause i dont think saving the memory for the games would take up much space

i also doubt that i'll download alot of other songs/videos

whats the suggestion?

Well some games have mandatory installs that can be up to five gigs each so you may need to upgrade after you get like, 6-7 games.

1st question: yes. 2nd question: no

Yeah, that's what I did (after I upgrade to 120gb) with my old 40gig HDD, too. It sold pretty fast and w/ the extra cash I think I remember using it to get my white Dualshock 3 controller, LOL.

My how I love my Ebay! :D

You just buy another HardDrive, Its very easily replaceable, takes about 5-10 mins. And backing up your data can be performed right on the system, if you just hook up an external harddrive.

I only have like 3 gbs left because I loaded my PS3 with about 20 albums, like 15 boxing fights, and installed MGS4, R6V2, GTA IV and Oblivion.

Leon7J7

I think that's the best answer. And you're right about the mandatory installs usually being the most likely culprit. I think that's probably what the OP was experiencing in wondering what happened to all of his space.

That's what definitely made me upgrade mines. Hell, I knew after I started to hit 19-20gig I knew I need to upgrade. LOL

....well, that and the fact that I'm a avid theme downloading addict (have over 30+ themes and counting!), LOL--that probably was taking my space too!

If your 60 gb has 20 gb left on it, how many gb would be left if you had a 40 gb? I'll give you some time to think about your post...

Yes but PS3 has faster in-game loads. That's what matters. To the point, my PS3 has 21 GB of space left after MGS4, GTA IV, COD4 & Burnout Paradise installs. I think it'll go down to 19 or 20 GB when i'm fully done MGS4. I have BC:Bad Company Demo & MGS Database...not much atm. I still want to know what's eating the space up...

yep and your ps3 has 3.2 ghz and uses 50gb blu ray discs for games. its hard to belive that the developers ran out of disc space. 50GB.

The PS3 is a JOKE. IMO

Trolls are a joke. You know whats said is that you talk about how its sad that 50 gbs arent enough for PS3 games, well thats about ten times more than the 360 discs can hold. So whats sad??

I think the sony updates would end up taking most of your PS3's space overtime... As for games, yea I get kind of annoyed... only 6-7 and it's full I think the 60GB in the Club room has about 40+GB used thats like what maybe 7-8 games + Sony updates.... Haven been to the club in ages so not sure whats going on now lol...

If you really did order that then, im sorry to say but it will not work on the ps3.

That hard drive is SATA and the interface for the ps3 is like a 2.5" laptop hard drive with the 40 pins.

Luckily I won't have that problem anymore, I just purchased a new HDD which will arrive on Monday. 160 GB seems rational, since I don't place that much music or videos onto the system, but for games it most likely will be enough. If you're low on space, upgrading is a key action with the PS3, since it was designed that gamers have access to the upgrade option, which is pretty cool.

I don't own a 40GB but I have a 60GB model and I was running out of space recently. I bought a 250GB hard drive, with much difficulty in swapping (damn screws). I would have had to upgrade half a year to a year ago if I bought a 40GB. It's a shame that some developers use installs as a crutch, but it doesn't bother me now.
