What does it mean?

Why do games look good in it?

if you know anything about computer monitors 1080p means 1920 x 1080 resolution and the p stands for progressive which means all the lines of the image are drawn on the screen at the same time while 1080i where i stands for interlaced only half the line are drawn on the screen and then the other half on the next screen but it happens so fast the human eye doesn't really notice it. but you can tell with fast moving images. so games look great because its writing 1080 lines of an image on the screen at the same time which in the end just looks sexy. does that help?

Human eye doesn't really notice it............you can tell with fast moving images..........games look great. Kind of a conflicting response.

My monitor says it does 1920x1200 - So is that 1200p?

while conflicting it is also correct.. if you were to say watch law and order in 480i and 1080p there would be no difference aside from the sharpness of the image (there wouldnt be screen tearing).. where as if you were to watch someone play... heavenly sword for example and you were at the level where you run down the big rope and you were to play it on a 480i tv and then a 1080p tv there would be a LARGE difference.. not only in sharpness of the picture (sharpness in this case meaning that there arnt alot of jagged lines around the objects in the game) but there would be also less visual "screen tearing" which is what happens when an interlaced tv/resolution only loads half of the lines at a time and is most noticable when for example, you whip the camera around causing it to look like the top of a building is not centered on the rest of it because the bottem lines refreshed faster then the top.

So what you are saying it that the quality is relaitive to the source?

So the game / video image has to be up to scratch, or else the extra Pixels are wasted.

All PS3 games are in 1080p? right?

p = progressive

i = interlaced

Progressive video means that every pixel on the screen is refreshed in order (in the case of a computer monitor), or simultaneously (in the case of film). Interlaced video is refreshed to the screen twice every frame - first every Even scanline is refreshed and then every Odd scanline. This means that while NTSC has a framerate of 29.97, the screen is actually being partially redrawn every 59.94 times a second. A half-frame is being drawn to the screen every 60th of a second. So cut that in half for progressive.

Only a few games can run in full 1080p, at this moment. And that number should increase over the coming years..

Really thats terrible? I always thought they were 1080p, thats how they sell them :(

Oh well...

What resoultion are they actually in then? What a waste of a 1080p Monitor.

So wait a sec, if they can't make 1080p games now, why would they be able to in the future if the hardware is the same?

Do they need to unlock the power or something?

Most games run in 720p or 1080i. Some do run in 1080p. It's all up to the developer to decide what they want to use. I'm sure they take into account how good they want it to look, versus the cost of developing the superior image.

Those are the native resolutions in which the games were developed. The only PS3 game I'm aware of with native 1080p is NBA The Inside ( a game which few like, although I enjoy it). Same goes for the 360. The 360 has the ability to upscale all games to 1080p none of which are true 1080p ( that I'm aware of ). I really wouldn't focus on it so much. It's definitely not a waste to have a 1080p capable screen. Frame rate is the biggest reason most games are not in 1080p.
