If you buy the ps2 with the game FFXI then it comes with HDD.

What you friend means is that as long as it is using IDE connections it should work. That is true to an extent, Western Digital drives don't fit properly and would need some modification. It is also seemingly random as to whether or not a drive will work, almost all drives will, but every now and then they won't. Only the official Sony hard drive works with FFXI though, and that is the only game that really uses the hard drive. Oh and anything that is SATA or SCSI will not work, make sure it either says IDE or Ultra ATA as they are the connections that the PS2 uses. Past that however you best bet would be Circuit City or Best Buy if you wanted to stay away from online retailers.

And, the beauty of the PS2 version of FFXI is that the HDD has the game pre-installed. If only Sony would re-release the FFXI w/ 40GB HDD package at a reasonable price before discontinuing manufacutring the PS2 consoles altogether. If not, lets hope that there will be a FFXI for the PS3.

Whyd you want one? its useless. Trust me I have one and its just not worth it unless you really want to play FF11(comes with HDD) Since you cant save games directly to it or get game saves off of it. And you cant store music on it.
