At the end of 2008, where they may officially say they will stop manufacturing and shipping PS2 to retailers. But of course, in these next couple of months.... The PS2 is one of the biggest profit Sony has(apart from their LCD TVs/walkmans/phones/etc.).
At E3 this year, it was said that there are still 160 games (At that time) being released for the PS2 here in the US. I'm not 100% sure, but you could possibly double or even triple that number overseas.
They will only stop producing/selling PS2 systems when either one of two things happen. The fist being that a large majority of the PS2 community has transfered over to the PS3, or the technology in games gets too advanced for the PS2 to handle it. But if neither of those happen, the PS2 will live on forever.
Sony said they'll hang onto the production line 4 10 yrs, probs SCE games will still be released [e.g: ICO was a SCE game.] But developers will b havin' a field day with the new simplified encoding for the ps3, tough luck.. little slimline ps2
at least until the end of 2008, I haven't heard taht its going to last till 2009 but I won't complain if they bring out some more decent games before that time comes.
Maybe to next December. December 2008, cause right now ps2 it is still the leader, with awesome games!!! I think ps2 it's still alive and with good games, (it has a lot!!!!) well ps2 rules, 8)
i think they're waiting to see if the ps3 is gonna shine a lil more, but as soon as that happens, the ps2 is gonna get its final blow
i'll keep playin my games in it until i get old (some games are absolute classics and live on forever, that's why systems never trully end. think of sonic and bomberman for the sega saturn, lots of people still play it nowadays)
The PS2 will definitely shine for at least one more year - the installed base is too huge for Sony to ignore. I know a good number of PS2 users who are as yet unwilling to upgrade to a PS3 because of the price, or are deciding between the other next-gen systems.
I'm really glad to see that Sony will still support the PS2 for at least another year or two...when most companies come out with a new system, the old systems stop production within a few months. Granted, I plan on getting a PS3 sometime around this Christmas (fingers crossed for a decent post-Thanksgiving sale that lets me pick up a 60 GB one for $400 or less), but it's still nice to see that they understand that the PS2 is still a profitable system.
If you ask for a definite date then there would be none, I supposed Sony will still be making games for the PS2 even dough the PS3 has been release, judging by the fact that the PS3 isn't doing very well in terms of market sales, I wonder if it is true that they rush-release the PS3 in order to catch the holiday season.PS2 will be around for years, maybe longer, as I am still hoping to buy one...
When the PS3 finally sales more than it, I'm guessing about a year and that the final price before it ends will be $90. The developers will stop making games for it 6 months after that and then they will completely focus on PS3 (and Wii and 360) making it as good as the PS2; more games = more options = better system. That's my guess.
