Surely both FFX and XII are appealing and playable, probably great for a FFVIII-only player. The storyline of the XII is less ambitious than the X's, but this doesn't mean the X is better. In fact, I think that with FFX Squaresoft tried to emulate the success they gained with FFVII and its enigmatic plot, obviously not accomplishing the target: as many said, the story is linear, brings no real questions to the gamer apart from "why was I playing blitzball in Zanarkand and suddenly after I find myself in another era where Zanarkand is long gone?". Tricks used to make the plot go smooth are mostly quite fairy-tale like, and don't appeal well to the audience IMHO. Plus, the conclusion doesn't stand well: it is tricky, almost trivial (fairy-tale like as I said earlier), but this comes as a minor shortcoming since you'll be thinking about fighting and exploring when you finally get the chance.
I wouldn't bore the "characters" matter: the desire to make complex and realistic personalities in a game (even in an RPG) is collapsing as the characters get more polygons on their skins for each new episode of any saga.
Gameplay and graphics-wise, FFX is an excellent game, though it could soon get very boring if you're not a fan of Square's RPGs.
