You can only save PS1 saves on a PS1 memory card. You can however move the PS1 saves from the PS1 memory card onto a PS2 memory card to save space on the PS1 memory card, but the saves on the PS2 memory card won't be readable when you try to access it in-game. This just frees up space on your PS1 memory card....
