Heya all, i'm fairly new to the gamespot community!

Fresh off kicking my 3 year WoW addiction i've dusted off my PS2 and have recently been playing God of War 2 and after being lost in the world of MMO's for so long, i've realised that I've really missed the world of frustratingly hard bosses and lots of dying and such.

I've been out of touch with the console world for a long time and I was wondering - are there any really hard, contra style, boss fights galore and such platform games for the PS / PS2 that anyone can recommend?

I've seen there's a contra game for the PS2 - is that any good? Any hidden platformer gems around?

You should definitely pick up the metal slug anthology.

Both of the mega man collections are great and so is the sonic one if you want old school pleasure.

Klonoa 2 is a fantastic sidescrolling platformer as well, but it might be too cutesy for your taste.

There are so many any Megaman or Megaman Anniversary, Pacman World, Klona

An oldie but a goodie. From the PS1 launch.

Rayman

looks great , sounds great, challenge it there, and as you progress your character gets new abilities.

I might also suggest Capcom Classics Collection Vol. 1

It has some great old school arcade platformers like Gunsmoke, Commando, Mercs......

But, no matter the niche, if you want to have some kick ass Boss battles, then you should give a try to Shadow of the Colossus, do a simple search here at gamespot and realice why this game is so good.

The best boss battles on videogames IMO

I recomend the Sly Cooper series, Jak series , Ratchet and Clank series , Ape Escape and Psychonauts. I highly recommend Psychonauts over any otehr platformer ( that's saying a lot due to teh fact I'm a Ratchet and Clank loyalist)

Awesome, I saw the Metal Slug anthology around and I thought it would be a crappy cash-in, definately will check that out - as well all the rest (such as Jak & Dexter and Psychonauts).

I bought Shadow of the colossus off ebay over the weekend, CAN'T WAIT to play that :D
