Looks like a massive improvement over the bad DA2. Hopefully it delivers...

@attirex:

I'm about 3 hours in. So far, so good. Had a few issues running it with Mantle, so I switched back to DX11. Visually, it looks great. The story so far, is a little slow and a bit confusing at times (played both games before it), but it's starting to pick up. Between the quests, farming resources, etc, there's a lot to do. Overall, I'm quite enjoying it. Haven't touched the multiplayer yet. I might give that a go a bit later.

I'll probably pick it up on sale for $10 this summer (when there's literally nothing else to play) but I am not exactly "psyched" to play it. Bioware's games are pretty played out in my opinion. I'm just not a fan anymore.

Was watching a friend play for a while and it looked pretty shitty. The combat didn't look good from an action standpoint or a tactical one. You can't please both sides in the same game, it was inevitable. And writing/cutscenes was typical modern Bioware garb.

Maybe a few years ago if I was desperate enough, but now with the return of the cRPG on PC there's no way I'd go near this, even if it is somewhat improved on 2. 1 was never that good in the first place, it's just that there wasn't much going on at the time, as far as party based RPGs go, so it got overrated.

Pass, I'm waiting for Pillars of Eternity. I didn't like DA:O and although I did enjoy DA2, this one doesn't look very interesting. Looks like they shoehorned in a bunch of unnecessary mechanics and busy work to pad the time to completion (research, crafting/enchanting/galaxy at war type crap). Plus the whole idea of working for the Chantry chaps my ass and from what I have read the only interesting companion is Varric. Interest level = zero.

The only good thing about this being released is that now Bioware can transition into ME4 mode, which I have a faint hope might not turn out as a catastrofuck of epic proportions... an almost infinitesimally small hope... like near the plank length amount of hope.

So far really loving it. Definitely a graphics beast. I have 660ti with things kind of turned up and down mid range. I've definitely noticed a slow down in the cut scenes. The actual game itself plays just fine and still looks really good.

I agree. There is just too much out or coming out that I actually want to play, and don't have time to play, to take up my limited schedule with another Dragon Effect game. When I am off in the summer, and nothing is coming out, I may still give it a look if for nothing else but the unintentional laughs.

Going to wait for patches. Had some glitches and bugs concerns from reading the reviews, and now recent word of poor KB+M controls has consolidated my decision.

So I've played it for a couple of hours. Hrm..I guess I was expecting something else. I switched between keyboard + mouse and a controller. While it is real-time I wouldn't really call it "action" but it's a more engaging way to roll numbers. I'm going to stop being jaded right now, but there's a lot to like about Inquisition. However, you can definitely see how much the console market drives decisions for game development. Because of that the tactical combat is broken[in my opinion] and the PC controls feel like they're missing something.

Probably better off just watching a LP. Here's one.

Ok, that looks pretty bad. I'm still baffled when I hear praise for Bioware's writing staff. My sixth grade class could probably come up with something more original, and I don't have a very bright or motivated classroom this year.

It didn't used to be that bad when they actually had good writers (like Drew Karpyshyn) instead of people straight out of college or who's idea of subtlety is something out of an M. Night Shyamalan movie. The narrative panders to the lowest common denominator like S. Collins or G.R.R. Martin fans (the South Park episode was spot on IMO), which is why I have almost zero hope the next Mass Effect will be anything but a cash-in. I am to the point no where I might as well not even bother buying narrative heavy RPGs anymore since I can buy half a dozen novels for the same amount of money and get much more enjoyment out of them. I really hope Pillars and Torment change this for the better.

EDIT: I was trying to find the video clip where Fry rants about clever things making people feel stupid and unexpected things making them feel scared, but I couldn't find it. Sigh...

Oh it's not that bad by itself. There are a lot of things that seem like a big F.U. to fans of the original game though (UI, controls, tactics).

You just have to take it as is. BioWare is not that same company which made Origins, they haven't been for quite some time....

@slateman_basic:

Real time w/ pause, which personally is my favorite RPG combat mechanic, but the story and characters are meh so I'm not really interested. I'm waiting for Pillars of Eternity and Torment.

I've watched a few let's play...while the graphics are pretty and the world itself looked like it could be fun to explore almost everything else was a turn off. Combat appeared to be laborious. The customization options fairly shallow. To top it all off there's the fact it's a Bioware RPG so it's just crammed to the brim with excessive cut-scenes, silly dialog, dating baloney, and other nonsense I have no interest in.

As someone mentioned above if it weren't for the fact we are in the midst of a cRPG revival I may have considered picking it up for cheap...but with all the awesome cRPG's out forget about it. Right now enjoying Lords of Xulima which I am finding really fun.

It's funny how I read this thread before as a hype thread, now it is merged, and it's a "stinks" thread. Wh'ev.

I'm 8-hours+ in and just realizing how the war-table is the centerpiece.

Yea, the controls can be clunky with keyboard/mouse, and yea the battles can be a matter of holding the mouse-clicked while pressing "4" or "2", yet this game still delivers.

It delivers a sense of exploration & color unlike most games in the past couple years. The party factor adds a great layer of variety, and there are choices that feel like they lead somewhere. I wish the gear was more diverse or at least accessible at earlier levels, yet the game is just starting to spell out it's main-pace. So far I've had no regrets. It definitely plays more real-time than strategy however. The battles haven't been challenging yet, yet maybe I'm just enjoying this game as a tourist; rather than a combatant.

Either way, there won't be anything else like it till at least mid-winter. A solid open-map fantasy game in my book.

I'm 22 hours in an so far it's a pretty fantastic game. The resource collection for upgrades can get a little tedious and I don't like the limited scope of the leveling up elements, but story is fantastic, decisions you make effect the world in huge ways and the game play is decently fun, especially as a mage.

I think this is a pretty great game, but I'm kinda annoyed at how many simple design problems it has.Take for example the tactical camera, which is just a complete mess because it's not free enough - you get stuck on trees, fences and you can never get good angles. Close quarters that tactical camera basically frustrating. Also the inventory is pretty horrid. None of these are unbearable, but they are just eye-rolling mistakes.

Does this game run poorly with Mantle for anyone? The load times are longer and the game is a stuttering mess. Game runs okay in DX11.

Has anyone been doing a lot of multi? What's your experience with it? To me its so laggy with broken matchmaking (people don't see your game so when you create one, no one joins... or no one plays on pc?) that im thinking of double dipping and grabbing the ps4 version and no i don't live on north pole with internet made of an iceberg.

That sounds potentially frustrating, does the combat work ok in third person mode? I'd prefer to use the tactical camera but if its frustrating I might just stick to the action-camera if it works better.

Yea, I pretty much ignore the tac cam. It is an action RPG after all. Bioware has seemed to go entirely that route so I see no need for the tactical camera. Especially considering it's so limited that I don't see a huge use for it. It's like they put it in game just to say, look the tac cam is back.

3rd person mode on the other hand is fine. Combat is actually decently fun. The pause function is still there so you are easily able to pause your game at any time to set up strategies, trigger attacks, and move characters if needed.

Yeah, this new thread is jumping the gun a bit. I have legitimate bugs, glitches and stability concerns, which is merely consolidated, not superseded, by words of control issues. I have yet to make a single comment on the actual quality of the game, which I am reserving for when I actually play it.

there was no reason to ever use the tac cam in DAO either. i literally never used it and never had an issue playing the game at all. just pause, issue commands, and watch everything play out. DAI plays no different from DAO unless you want to manually click or hold a trigger to attack. outside of that, identical combat experience. just a lot "flashier" now.

my biggest complaint is honestly that the game uses tessellation... but not on anything worth tessellating. there is zero tessellation on armor and character models. tessellation on character models can look amazing, giving their heads and facial features a real "smoothness", and can make clothing and armor look very nice. as it stands the game just uses tessellation to make some rocks poke out of the ground. it doesnt even tessellate hillsides or statues or anything.

I'm actually using the tact cam more than DA:O, which is strange because I can see how DA:O was more a tactical game with all the rules and stuff. But I found the combat in that game so horrible that I was just like "get it over with" and give me more story. In this game I actually kinda enjoy the combat but recognize they need a better camera setup. The tact cam works decent in open, flat areas. Which is fortunately a good chunk of encounters. On Normal you don't have to use it much, but I prefer using it several times per battle just to minimize health loss.

I find this game so captivating, particularly the characters and narrative. The scope is tremendous and the world zones spectacular. This is easily the most addicting game I've played all year and already moved to the top of my list. Flawed yes, but most Bioware games have had similar flaws.

Wow, I've actually come across choices in a Bioware game that I actually had to think about. This is probably the first Bioware game which doesn't simply have obvious good and evil decisions.

They DA world just has so much more depth compared to the previous entries. The Mage vs Templar conflict and the Grey Wardens actually have moral ambiguity. It's not simply Templars are corrupt and Grey Wardens are jedi knights.
