I just recently purchased a Toshiba 1080p LCD TV.  I have my 360 hooked up to it using the component cables that were shipped with the unit.  When I go into the display menu on the 360 dashboard and select 1080p, my screen goes black and I have to switch back to 1080i.  My question is, do I need the VGA cable to get the 1080p signal to work?  Also, since my TV's native resolution is 1080p, do I even need the bump to 1080p, because doesn't my TV upconvert 1080i into 1080p anyways?  Any tech junkies help welcome!  I need an answer before I commit to purchasing the VGA cables.   Thanks.

Many 1080p HDTV's won't accept a 1080p signal over anything but HDMI.  Many Toshibas fall into this category.  If you can give me the model number I'll tell you for sure.

What do you mean by "check the cables"?  they are the component cables that that came with the system.  and the tv is 1080p.  it's a toshiba regza 42" lcd flat panel.  basically, can i get 1080p with component cables, or will a VGA cable be a must?  also, if my tv's native resolution is 1080p (converts everything to 1080p)  do i even need to have 1080p selected on my dashboard, or will 1080i suffice - seeing thta its is upconverted to 1080p?

I think you're on to something. before i purchased the TV, i hit up all of the HDTV forums for info. what i came to find out is that the sony bravia is the only lcd flatpanel that accepts a 1080p signal, hence the $800 difference in price between the 42" sony and the 42" toshiba. it was made clear to me by MULTIPLE HDTV gurus that the difference between a TRUE 1080p signal and an UPCONVERTED 1080p signal are completely unrecognizable by the human eye. both signals are 1080 and both are progressive. people seem to think that sony just hypes up its 1080p signal acceptance as a reason to charge so much more for their product. thanks for the comment - it lit up the ol' lightbulb in my head.

Hi,

I'm having the same problems as the original poster. I've tried component cables and the xbox360 is able to obtain 720p and 1080i but a "no signal" when I try 1080p on the system settings.

The model number isbelow.Could you verify whether or not this Toshiba LCD will or will not allow 1080p for my xbox360? Thanks in advance.

This is your tv right?

I'd bet that it only accepts 1080p through HDMI. If it does have a VGA input, check your manual for the resolution it supports. A lot of times VGA is put there for PC support and thus don't even do full 720p sometimes. My 65inch Toshiba DLP only takes 1080p through HDMI, Component limited to 1080i, and VGA limited to 1024*768 (not even a widescreen resolution)

Your tv converts everything to 1080p, no matter what. Though, while say if you gave it a 1080i HD movie, it may be able to turn it back into 1080p, but during fast motion most tvs can't handle it and you see as little as 540p (a single 1080i field). Only a few tvs have been known to do that perfectly with inverse teceline, usually not even the top of the line Sonys. That being said, I'm sure with movies you'd notice it looking more like 1080p with 1080i, rather than 720p.

Though, with games, and nearly all being 720p, just choose 720p, that way the tv only has to upsconvert one progressive signal to another. If you leave it at 1080i, you are limiting your games to 30fps, then you force the 360 to turn it into an interlaced singal, and then the tv has to deinterlace it, which again doesn't ever go perfect, and there's nothing to gain from doing all that since they again started at 720p.

Being a PC monitor it should accept 1080p over VGA, as that would have to support upto the full monitor resolution, which is above 1080p.

Running at 1080p won't help jaggies at all unless the game runs originally at 1080p. Most all the games on the 360 are 720p, so choosing 1080p only upscales it to that, so the jaggies will still be there the same as running 720p.

Are you using component right now at 720p or something? You are not using the yellow composite cable are you?

I'm using component and I run it at 1080p.

I have a semi-related question: we just got a hitachi HDTV, and my 360 is currently being unbricked in somewhere, texas. I was just wondering if component cables can run the 360 in 720p, or if I need HDMI. Also, since the tv is either 1080i or 1080p, does it run 720p at all?

Component can do 1080i and 720p, and sometimes 1080p if the TV allows it. And a 1080p tv will accept 720p, it will uspcale to full 1080p, like any other resolution, tv channel, is given to it.. Only 5+ year old crt 1080i tvs might not accept 720p.

You're using the Digital video input on your tv right? It supports D5 right? Some TVs has D4 support for digital and supports 1080p only with HDMI. If you guys dun have a XBOX360 elite... and wanna buy a Full HD television.... you all should look for the D5 support.

my friends dad just bought a 50 Inch Plasma LG and we had it in 1080i Over the regular R,G,B cables and i got to looking through the manual and it said it supports 1080p so i then tell him to exit his game and when he clicked 1080p it worked! now on this TV the jaged Edges in 1080i were there i mean you could really tell but in 1080p they were less apparant. so if you have an older Xbox 360 get a LG Plasma.

Well I use the VGA input and my games look best on that input, especially since my Sammy does 1:1 mapping and I also get the added benefit of upscaling of DVD's(which if you use component the XBox won't upscale them).
