I just started preloading Skyrim on Steam and it is less than a 6GB download and I think will be around 4.8 after everything is complete (I'm probably wrong, but once I told Steam to download it, it had the thing pop up to show you what was needed, what you had, and how long it would take to download, and the space required said 4.8 GB). How is this game that small of a file size?

Re-using tons of assets, it could be huge, but just has a bunch of repeated stuff. Crysis is only 7gb, while Rage is 25gb.

In Oblivion there were a lot of reused things like trees and ground textures. I could Skyrim being similar. It may not be that bad though. These days with modern game engines they can recolor a tree in real time in the game, not needing a separate texture for every little change. For example, they can programmatically add snow (white) or fall (orange, yellow, red) to a tree's leaf textures without requiring separate texture files. The game engine as well as modern fast computers can make that happen, saving a lot of disk space.

Well, as long as the content is good. If it runs like crap or looks like crap I don't care because as a PC gamer, I have mods that fix a game (just like they did with Oblivion and both FO games).

Size does not always matter, look at Rage.. 6 hour game and over 20GB.

Bethesda also uses alot of compression (which they have gotten better at since Oblivion came out).

Some of the. Biggest games are only a few mb in size. Media size is irrelevant to game size, only rellavant to how many fmv's at full HD I can put on there

Bethesda has done a very, let's say, thorough job at making it 100% clear that the dungeons are all hand-crafted and unique.

the new engine is pretty much a technical marvel in the field, and it allows for a very sophisticated compression procedure. in other words, is normal, the game still looks good and its still huge

What? Over 150+ dungeons are UNIQUELY handcrafted.. meaning no copy and paste.......Please be more informed before you post nonsense like this. Thanks!

-.-, there's no magic, it's just recycling texture tiles or 'n such as often as possible to keep the size down... doesn't mean it's copy-paste if they re-use assets... even Rage w/o a single repeated texture, uses stamps that are re-used constantly to generate those unique textures... however since they're actually baked into a texture, it makes the game huge.

It is called compression. Either that, or we could prepare ourselves for some heavy copy paste. I certainly am hoping for the former. I am sure we will see a lot of recycled textures though. But as long as the level design isnt recycled, its fine.

They also that Oblivion was a deep RPG. And just how deep and sophisticated the radiant AI was.

Point is, Bethesda isnt exactly trustworthy.

Indeed! The nerve of these guys, passing off what is essentially an action-adventure game, as a rpg! If you honestly think Oblivion was a deep rpg - well, I don't know what to say...???

At any rate, I'm bored and I have about $40 in Best Buy reward points that are expiring soon so, against my better judgement, I may actually pick this up on Friday. Best Buy will also price match Toys R Us and their $15 gift card so, all told, if I do buy it, it'll cost about $5. I'm willing to take a risk at that price. Like I said, I'm bored and even an action-adventure game with some lite RPG elements is better than nothing.

Footprint size has nothing to do with the actual size of the game world. I guarantee you that the game world in Daggerfall is hundreds of times larger than Skyrim but was only 118 megs.

Some of you guys are in denial. I'm not saying the game world will be small but obviously the game will only have one layer of depth in its visuals. Same textures, same models, used and re-used through out the game. Just the same as all of Bethesda's products...

Fallout 3 = 60% wasteland 40% sewers..

Oblivion: 50% green grass, 40% dungeons (which all looked the same), 10% Oblivion gates (which all looked the same).

Eh... Compressed files mean there's going to be a lot of uncompressing happening.. which means tons of HDD use and I can already feel the stutterings and "loading area..." messages that come with that 1 second freeze.

Judge when you play not by the size of the game file. Look at RAGE. It was gargantuan and yet the end product not so much

After using steam for so long now, some strange part of me is saying, "hey this game seems deceptively smaller then it should be! something is up! will it be lacking in quality!?" hahah, less for me to download :), so keen and 11.11.11 can't come soon enough, I'm glad BF3 and Skyrim were decently spaced out as well

It gives me a chuckle when I see so many people buying into the whole compression thing. Oblivion, Fallout 3 and their expansions reused the same textures over and over again for many many areas and surfaces, which is what Skyrim will do too. Some games that are large have a lot of unique textures which aren't really reused as often as well as containing video files which take up a lot of space.

That makes me think how crappy Rage is. Lots of Gb for awful textures and a few hours of gameplay. People used to think "oh, why doesn't Skyrim use IdTech 5? Fallout 4 definitely should use it!". Hopefully it'll never be used for Bethesda games.

I doubt Tech5 can do trees anyway, it would add too much surface area to each tile of the mega texture, it would just be a blurry mess.
