Windows 7 vs Windows Vista

Ok, I am currently starving for a brand new OS, and would like to know what benefits Win7 will have over Vista, how much better it's performance might be, and all that.

Nearly any Raid 0 setup can match a SSD.

Yeah I've been using Windows 7 RC (32-bit) for a while now on my laptop and have had no real problems with it. Comparing it to 64-bit Vista, which I used earlier this year for quite some time) I'd say it's a bit faster and definitely less of a memory hog...plus I like the new layout and such :)

I've never had an issue with HL2 using W7x86. Runs like a dream.S0H0

I noticed you have the G man in your display pic. As of now, Windows 7 has compatibility issues with Half-Life 2. You might want to check into that before you buy.brandontwb

Um, what issues would those be? Perhaps the trouble that many people have running HL2 in its 64-bit mode, which is just as common on Vista if not moreso? Sure 7 is currently an RC and you shouldn't expect miracles from it, but...

HL2 runs fine on 64-bit Windows 7 (and Vista) if you set it to 32-bit mode, and the game's 64-bit mode can be made to work with some tweaks to config settings. Of course, if you're only using 32-bit Vista or 32-bit 7, then you don't need to do anything special to make HL2 work.

Windows 7 x64, run all source games fine.

i sell PCs for a living. Vista's main issue isnt compatibility, its brand perception. hopefully they fix it this time. so far every customers "friend of a friend" hates vista coz it cant run some obscure old program. Yet, everyone who comes in quoting "their IT guy from work", all the feedback for win7 is positive.

Vista isn't as bad as most people think, it is pretty good.. but Win7 is better in the sense it uses a bit less system resources so everybody wins, that and 7 works faster with SSD's than other OS's, plus you can get it Retailfor only £50 before the price shoots up to £150

cant go wrong, never ever seen a retail OS go for that price on preorder.

Where do you get Windows 7 and the beta?

Well the difference memory wise is the way Windows 7 manages it, they've changed it, I read Windows 7 put's things in parallel, whereas Vista kinda stacks processes. The reason why BOTH Windows 7 and Vista use a fair amount of RAM is Superfetch, which adds most used programs and processes into your Ram for faster viewing/access, the other difference is that Windows 7 appears to scale better from low end PC's to High-end PC's, wheres as Vista can struggle on lower end PC's Vista's base Ram is said to be 600mb, and Windows 7 is around 300mb, but having said that Vista on a system with 2gb RAM on 32-bit runs just fine, and on 64-bit 4gb RAM it flies, Windows 7 is just more efficient at it. It is known Windows 7 is based off of Vista code, and its driver set, they've had a public beta and feedback and Listened to us.

In a nutshell Windows 7 is a decent improvement over Windows Vista, including everything people have said before me, and I would recommend to anyone to pre-order it now!!

Windows 7 is also far more efficient in regards to SSD's which is the biggest selling point for me.

I've written things about windows 7 on here before, and i did mention this trick once, erm cant remember when but yes that is true, just go into task manager on vista, and click the resource manager it will reveal the amount vista is using and its not much different to 7, yet 7 does things better as ive stated above.

This trick actually threw me off thinking wtf are we being fooled into thinking windows 7 is different some way when handling memory when it actually isnt? until i read some things like this
