I am planning to update up gaming laptop to Windows 10 but since I use my gaming laptop to play older games, how is the games compatibility of games going back 10+ years on Windows 10? Has anyone tried it?

***Please post you results for any games (especially older ones) on Windows 10 that you have tried on this thread***

So far games that have been tested that work if it doesn't issue in question has been noted:

  • Crysis 1
  • Blood
  • Duke Nukem 3d
  • Witcher 1
  • Half Life 2
  • Alien vs Predator ( 2000 )
  • Close Combat 2: A Bridge Too Far (1997)
  • Combat Flight Simulator 2 (2000)
  • Quake 2 (1997)
  • Combat Flight Simulator 3 (2003)
  • Deus Ex (2000) - Mouse movement jumpy. Possible nVidia driver issue.
  • Homeworld - Mouse movement jumpy. Possible nVidia driver issue.
  • Homeworld 2 - Mouse movement jump. Possible nVidia driver issue. Menus are too zoomed in.
  • Tomb Raider Legend (2006)
  • Tomb Raider Anniversary (2007)
  • Star Trek Voyager Elite Force
  • Unreal Tournament (1999) - Install file from the original disc doesn't run.
  • Blitzkrieg (2003)
  • Sacred Gold
  • Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War runs on it but would not on 8.1 no matter what i did.
  • Knights of The Old Republic runs fine.
  • Halo
  • Halo 2
  • Planescape: Torment
  • Baldur's Gate
  • Neverwinter Nights 2

Close Combat 2: A Bridge Too Far (1997) works as does Combat Flight Simulator 2 (2000). Quake 2 (1998) and Combat Flight Simulator 3 (2003) also work.

Games that work with Windows 8.1 should also work fine with Windows 10: Deus Ex (2000), Tomb Raider Legend (2006), Tomb Raider Anniversary (2007). All native installs.

Awesome guys! Thanks for the information. If anyone want's to chime in on the games that they tried on Windows 10. Preferably older titles, then feel free to chime in. This thread could have a list of all the older games that people tried on Windows 10.

Looks like I might upgrade to Windows 10 sooner than later. :)

Lastly, did the upgrade process go smoothly? Did anyone lose any important documents, files?

I am to lazy to backup all those stuff before upgrading.

BTW, did anyone try Quake 4? I know there were issues installing it on Windows 7.

Just an update......

The original Deus Ex installed fine and it runs. However there are movement quirks most likely due to the video drivers. The same goes for the original disc versions of Homeworld and Homeworld 2. The menus of the latter are too zoomed in. Then the install file of the original disc version of Unreal Tournament (1999) refused to run at all.

The original Blitzkrieg (2003) installed and ran fine. No glitches and still no copy protection. Res goes all the way to 1080p.

One big thing though is Sacred Gold. For a long time, it only installed under Windows XP although the installed game runs fine in all subsequent Windows versions all teh way to Windows 8.1. With Windows 10, it now installs and runs although max res is still a 4:3 ratio of 1024x768. This alone more than makes up for the glitchy games above. Yaay!

Nice. I have Deus Ex (the original GOTY version that came out in 2000). What do you mean by movement quirks. Does that make the game play annoying?

Mouse movement is very jumpy which renders the game unplayable. It played and controlled fine in Windows 8.1. I have no plans to replay it. So, it's not a big deal. But, for those who do, I hope a future update fixes it.

Then again, you have an AMD video card. From my past experience, older games play better with AMD/ATI cards.

Well thanks for the info. Good thing I made this thread. I have my gaming laptop in dual boot mode (it has a ATI card). I was thinking about going with one OS (Win 10) but after hearing that may just have the older OS as the second boot and the newer one on my other HD as I haven't fully played through Deus Ex ( I am in the very early stages of the game). I will see how it goes but it's good to know.

Now, we have a better idea of which games run well and which games don't.

I have edited the title to reflect the intention of this thread so we could have a result of all the games that run on Windows 10, especially older ones going back 10+ years. If you have tried any games that work on Windows 10 please post on this thread. Results of newer games is also fine.

Mods, maybe can we get a sticky, please?

The only issue I've had is with one game and that's PES 2015. It plays fine as before but every now and then the screen goes black for a split second, as if the monitor's been turned off and on incredibly quickly. Does anyone have similar issues or any idea what this could be? I got the newest Nvidia Windows 10 drivers (GTX 970).

I guess I'm mistaken. Apparently, MS dropped compatibility for the Combat Flight Simulator series (1, 2, and 3). They worked with Windows all the way to 8.1. So, it's surprising to see all three not working all of a sudden in Windows 10.

Actually, disregard my last post. Both CFS2 and CFS3 run on Windows 10, at least the 32-bit version. This, even though the compatibility listing on the MS Web site says the two games are not compatible.

On my netbook with 32-bit Windows 10:

That's why I keep old PCs around. I usually stick 32-bit Windows on them.

I have private messaging disabled for this site. Not interested with keeping things private.

CFS3 will only run on 32-bit Windows 10.

But, it'll run on both both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 8.1.

windows 10 is actually windows 6.4, there should be minimal problems.

I am recently getting windows error 80070103 on my laptop. I also checked on https://errorcode0x.com/windows-update-error-80070103/ and got to know that this kind of error occurs due to update issue of the system. Anyone else is facing such kind of error in their system? Kindly let me know if anyone has an idea regarding this kind of error in windows OS.

With 64bit Windows, any games with kernel level 32bit DRM driver wouldn't work.
