With Valve discussing virtual reality in March (likely invloving the Oculus Rift), not to mention all of the "Best of CES" Awards it has won at this year's show, I have become very optimistic toward the likelihood of the Oculus Rift being a success. What are your thoughts? Will you buy one? **EDIT** added a poll.

It's 300$ and not a chance, it's the cool thing now, after it gets released everyone will forget it exists, just like the 3D mouse that even Valve advertised.

Depends on the level of support it manages to reach in games after being out a while. If its around the level of 3D support in ps3 games that's not enough for me if its closer to how many titles can be played in 3D on pc then sure but to get there will take time assuming it ever gets there.

Yeah it seems kinda fad-ish to me. Would love to try one, not sure how much I would drop on it though.

Like the whole 120hrz 3D monitor thing, in reality they're often worse than 60hrz ones because you need a lower latency which often they have an even worse latency giving massive ghosting. So not only is active 3D **** you cannot view it in the day or you see flashing and gives you eye strain, however the monitor is actually worse as the make cut backs to hit the 120hrz for the same price.

Much like everyone else said, if it is the correct price. If it doesn't hit the correct price then it'll be just like the 3DS was, over-priced for what you are getting. I can see them selling a lot of copies if it is around ~$100.

Not likely. 3D makes me dizzy and if I was going to go that far, I'd want a more fully featured VR with holograms. It's kind of like buying a jetpack that can only fly ten feet off the ground to me. Sure it's cool, but it's expensive and is still not nearly as good as the real thing. Still, if I somehow find it super cheap somewhere, I may get one.

Of the technologies being introduced to gaming, Oculus Rift is the only one I am optimistic toward. As long as it's not too expensive, I will certainly consider a purchase if the support is good.

They would have to patch it for extra support to really get the full effect If the game lacks probably coded head tracking support your not getting the full effect the oculus rift can offer. It should still offer a 3D display that fills up your vision with just the game world assuming you can convert any regular 3D games to stereo-topic 3D on the oculus rift without needing support in game for the 3D to work on it.

Technically all games can be hacked to work with it through custom drivers and injectors. The leading project right now is the Vireio Perception driver.

Not likely. 3D makes me dizzy guynamedbilly

The Rift won't make you any dizzier than real life does.

They have said repeatedly in interviews that with the Oculus Rift, "Seeing is believing," (they have also admitted how corny that sounds) So I hope they get some big supporters who will help them get demo kiosks in places like Best Buy. I think that will be the key to selling these things.

Kind of.

ArmA 2 already supports TrackIR, which the Oculus Rift pretty much is. I bet it will work pretty seamlessly.

If the Oculus Rift can be made to work with any 3D game, and the head-tracking supports the TrackIR API, then I'm definitely buying one as soon as I can afford it! Combat flight simulators would be awesome with a HMD like that. I also kind of missed the one time I got to play Quake with a Forte VFX-1 helmet back in the late 1990s. Obviously, the technology wasn't as advanced back then, and even MORE expensive. (We're talking "four figures" expensive!)

I was excited about it up to the point where he mentioned the refresh rate of the screens is 30ms. That's really high, considering the majority of TN, and even some IPS, monitors run significantly lower than that.

If they resolve that response time issue though, I am definitely all for it.

From the CEO's CV:

Led the product team at Gaikai, the innovative GPU cloud company that's transforming the way video games are distributed. (acquired by Sony)

Former co-founder and CEO of Scaleform, the #1 user interface (UI) technology provider in the video game market. (acquired by Autodesk)

Do you notice a pattern?

pre-ordered a Dev Kit..  it will be cool i think but for the rest of you id hold off a bit they said ooh well have 500 units a day ooh we'll start shipping in April for pre-orders

nope and the sad thing is they have yet offically confermed the delay to the public.  the website still says "may shipping" I think they are biting off a bit more then they can chew most of their news updates are worded for PR and less honest, open timely feedback to their members for example they NEVER said at all that Unity Pro might be required to use Unity with the rift however yesterday they release this very "nice" PR worded "news" saying oh wow yeah Dev Kit owners will get 4 months of Unity Pro FREE! then you read further into the article and it says oops, Unity Pro is REQUIRED to use Unity on the Rift....well gee thanks for waiting till now to tELL US

and Palmer stating that "its not about PR" thats a joke.  They have been overhyping this thing for months and the problem is they reed to scale back on the hype train. get the dev kits out the door first giive it time for devs to come up with cool stuff  work on somehow finding ways to produce them faster so that devs can get them faster.

Its going to be a cool device i think but i am not sure if it will end up being a "must have" for gamers if a) they cant work on getting production faster and b) get more game support. and i find it odd tha Carmack one of the orignal people on board with the Rift and said Doom 3 is the first Oculus ready game....suddenly at the last minute oops sorry Doom 3 BFG wont be ready and theres no word at all if it will be ready for the Rift anytime soon a bit odd dont you think given how excited he seem to be and the fact he said at E3 last year "i think i have the best virtual reality demo the world has ever seen" - Carmack.

If you have the money sure go ahead pre-order a kit but your going to be waiting for a while. otherwise id take a wait- and see approach. honestly with all the news about it and he more or less have shared whats in the device itself i woudnt be suprised if other companys come up soon to develop something else like it at not a high cost

honestly a company like Nvidia might be better suited for it anyways Oculus only has 20 people i think and i think they really are biting off more then they can chew, a company like Nvidia would have much more resources to intigrate it into a lot more games and have much faster production instead of having to wait 4 months for them to churn out 14,000 units.

We shall see.

What it will do is separate your head from your gun, which is EXACTLY what you need to be able to do in a game like arma, keep your head on a swivel.
