Yeah it will work. Only thing is that the card is PCIe 3.0 and your motherboard has PCIe 2.0. I don't think that affects performance but I could be wrong. My buddy has a 7970 in a PCIe 2.0 slot and it works just fine. You may want to check on that though just for reference.

Why would you cheap out on your mobo?

Its best to get a good one if cost is a issue then just dumb down the 7970 to a 7950 and use the cost on the mobo.

The people who care about expensive mobo's are those that want to oc their cpu to the limit, i mean trying to hit 4.8ghz+ on a sandy bridge/ivybridge, or those that care about crossfire/sli. For everybody else a cheaper mobo is fine. My mobo only cost me $100...

This. If you're only after a single-GPU setup, then a lower profile mobo in the sub-$100 is absolutely fine. A lot of times, the high-profile, expensive motherboards have unnecessary features like cmos button, and the like and slaps on to the pricetag even more. You just gotta know what you plan to do, even if that includes the near future.

I dunno why the guy was even questioning his motherboard. It's an 1156 motherboard, so one would assume he's had the build for a while. Anyway, it's not exactly a cheap board, would have been pretty good for it's day.

fill in some questions, I chose the parts 2-3 years ago and am only upgrading now. I am not very knowledgable with tech, let alone when i was in year 9 choosing these parts :P

No i don't overclock (could never find a guide on how to do it, all assume you know about all the BIOS stuff) and yes i only have one GPU

I have a 2.0 mobo and a 3.0 graphics card (Radeon HD 7770). Games run fine on my computer, however my brother has the same card on a 3.0 motherboard and he gets slightly better performance on his machine. Right now I am saving up for a PCIe 3.0 / ivy bridge mobo and CPU, although my reasons for wanting a more powerful CPU are more work-related than gaming.

Graphic cards haven't even utilized PCIe 2.0 yet.
