If I was to get a AMD 7750, the new 2.8ghz dual core AM2+, would it be better to get the 9800gt ($110-$130) or the 260 ($180-$220), the 260 is the highest I'll go as I want to keep my total build, OS inculded, under $600...

I probably have a bias towards Nvidia and Intel, partly due to having an x800 die on me (and unable to refund it)

I've never used AMD before, but It looks like its the best for the budget (seeing how the motherboards are cheaper as well)

Or, should I just strip the 8800GTX out of my family PC... they probably could just do with a 9500gt or something cheap like that...

Actually... now that I think about it, would a 8800gtx be better than the 9800gt?

I would like to max out Empire Total War, but my 8800GTX didn't have the oommpph... either that or my E5200 is holding it back....

the 8800GTX is better than a 9800GT. Either go with your 8800GTX or get a GTX 260. I'd say if you game at any resolution less than 1920x1200, stick with the 8800.

Man that is one hefty GPU for a family PC lol. The 8800GTX is legend. Its better than the whole 9 series in many ways (wider bus and more memory). RTSs are known CPU whores.

I'm going with a micro atx build (I'll just have to remove the lower 3.5" slot) but yeah the monitor I'm looking at is only a 1200x800

Get a 4770, it's the new king of budget cards and if you have the mobo for it, crossfire them they perform better than a 4890!

Never heard of a LCD Monitor with that kind of resolution.... HD 4770 is perfect for your needs though, and a suitable match for a X2 7750 (IMO anyways)

no, 4770 is not better than 4890 I don't care what benchmarks say, the 4890 is underrated, the 4890 is a fantastic card.

I'm running Fallout 3 @ 50-60 fps at 1920x1080.... with just a 8800GT 512MB..... I'm so impressed at what this budget card can do, I don't see myself really wanting to upgrade til late this fall.

But I'm sure you want to future proof your system a bit beyond that if you're buying now..... so maybe Radeon 4770 x2 in CF or a GTX 260.

I would also look at the 9800GTX+/GTS250, they can be had for 125 to 160 and up to 1GB of memory and for Empire I would think that more memory would be the ticket.

Yeah i just noticed the 250 gts... I'll look into that, it also only requires one pci-e power cord instead of two which i'm guessing would save me money on a PSU...

But yeah I want something that is going to last 4 years (Even if it means playing on medium-low in the future to get playable fps) but I'm toning down my PC gaming in the long run
