My limit is under 150 bucks and I'm trying to get the best under that price, plus I need to upgrade, tired of 2.1 now.

Well an upgrade to 5.1 won't do you much good unless you really desire the surround. I would take that $150 and invest in a pair of quality monitors or monitors + sub.
Examples
2.0 -Swan D1010MKII 08 (2011 version)= $134
2.1 - Dayton B652 monitors + Lepai TA2020 t-amp + Dayton SUB-80 Subwoofer= $154.15
[QUOTE="NVIDIATI"]Pretty much music and games. So something like the Swan D1010MKII 08s - $134make the most sense, though you won't have as big of a boom without the subwoofer, the two speakers can produce a very large sound, crisp and detailed. If you are considering headphones I have some ideas in your budget.
Also what would you be using these speakers/headphones for? Music? Games? Movies?

I know it's a little out of your budget, but the Swan D1080MKII 08s - $178 would be able to produce a deeper bass and even larger sound that you might not expect from monitors of that size. A great upgrade from their little brother the D1010s.
These options will sound like day and night to your current setup and will bring your music and games alive.

That higher priced one sure does look very nifty, but I hope to do fine with the lesser one.:DSo what's the best budget 5.1? i.e. how cheap is the the cheapest 5.1 that you'd recommend... I take it you don't like Boston Acoustics (they have cheap everything) ... There's always that Onkyo with a receiver for 300 bucksWell an upgrade to 5.1 won't do you much good unless you really desire the surround. In addition to the Swans and Daytons mentioned above - which are excellent options - I would add the option of the M-Audio AV30 (~$100) or AV40 (~$200) depending on your budget, and the Audioengine 2s (~$200); this might be useful depending on your price and availability.

I've been impressed by their microsystems (compared to Mirage Nanosats and Cambridge Soundworks microsystems), and their older tower speakers. I will say that Boston Acoustics has moved away from traditional speakers in the past ten years, but I would never say that they were cheap. Like Bose, I'd just say that better values are out there. Maybe I'm out of touch; it's been some time since I've auditioned a BA product outside a car. ;)
