Within 5 or 6 years (2006-2012) pc cards has improved the visual grafics dramatically, how many more years will it take for the graphics to be photo realistic in video games on pc's.

It's all relative. I remember when the PS2 came out everyone was amazed by the new Madden's photo realism.

when will we hit the brick wall where graphics can't get that much better? I am looking forward to not updating hardware as much.

Won't happen, they will find something like holographic 3D with special lighting.

Even if we get photorealism with dx 13.in another 2years there will be dx14 with some crazy feature like fussalation or depth of f...(fill it with whatever you want).

I was thinking more along the lines of putting actual people in games, like what they did with Mortal Kombat except 3D... I mean with facial and motion capture becoming so prevalent along with everyone's obsession with realism, it seems like the next logical step (as much as I hate the idea)

Don't know. I think the graphics now are amazing. I was blown away by The Witcher 2 using DX 9.

I want greater use of subsurface scattering, more realistic shadowing like DX11's contact hardening shadows, Adaptive Bokeh, the shadowed billboard reflections, better SSAO. All around better physics, more interactive animations, ability for larger scale, real-time GI solutions like BF3 or Crysis 2.

Think of combining the best tech from Crysis, Stalker CoP, UE3's Samatarian Demo, and Battlefield 3. Then making a game with it :D

Let me think....never. We will never have PCs that are the size of current ones that can produce true photorealism. We'll come close in around 6 graphics card cycles.

SLI/Xfire explode, that's what haha. Man that would be wild to see! It's nice to see PC developers say "we aren't waiting any longer" and pushing new engines. To be fair though, games like Gears of War 3 on the 360 completely boggles my mind how they pull that off on such technology. I'll def. be buying BF3 on the PC, but curious to see how they pull it off on the consoles.

bad company 2 doesn't look bad on consoles, but the shadows make me so angry, the shadows are like blocks.

I'd say 20-30 years before they will have the horsepower to render each blade of grass, each hair, each mote of dust in the air realistically on 4000p monitors.

Nobody knows, hardware isn't the only thing holding back true photo realism.

The thought of photo-realistic graphics kinda scares me. I do not know if I'm ready for characters to look like real-live human beings. I still want my video games to look like video games. If you know what I mean..

Anyone hear of nanophotonics? Basically the processors communicate with light instead of electricity, allowing for over 1000x as much power.

there hasn't really been much improvement since 2007. crysis, world in conflict, call of duty 4 etc are still among the best looking games.

Ya sadly this is true. I recently played the original assassins creed and couldnt help but appreciate it's graphics even though it is a 2008 game it is definitely among the best looking PC games.

2040-5, thats theprojected time where we hit technological singularity the next generatiions of graphics/cpus developtment will happen with such rapidity moores law will not apply so you can argue sometime around that time

I noticed this myself as well. It's three-and-a-half years since it's release, and Crysis is STILL a very viable benchmark...and still quite a demanding one, too. Only the very best of today's hardware stands a chance of maintaining 60 FPS on Very High DX10. Anyway, we need to focus less on photorealism in gaming graphics-it's good enough as it is. Art style/aesthetics goes a longer way toward a visually appealing game. What we do need improvements in are animation (most modern game animations still look and feel very canned and artificial) and physics (titles like Red Faction: Guerrilla and Battlefield 3 should be the norm by now, and GPUs could take up the physics processing load). AI, too, if it's possible.

And then after that they'll do photon mapping(basically ray tracing but starting from the light source instead of the observer) All the stuff Ferret said seems like stuff we should be expecting in the forseeable future.

General lighting and tessellation is where I think things will go from here. Also LOD schemes need to be "fixed" in order to minimize pop and fade in.

One of DX11 tessellation's main features is to create a seamless LOD system. See things like Nvidia's endless city demo.
