I have Windows XP for my computer, and sound doesn't work without headphones. When I don't have my headphones plugged in, the sound doesn't work. When I do have them plugged in, the sound does work. How do I fix this? Step by step instructions please.

You mean the sound dosn't come out your speakers but when you use the headphone jack on your speakers the sound works perfectly? If so it could be a number of issues, all of which require the solution of new speakers.

are you positive? what caused this? I have heard about Windows XP having sound trouble when you install it, it could be that.

No, it has nothing to do with software because as your headphones work through the speakers you can tell that sound is leaving the PC perfectly fine it is also getting through the cables to and inside the speakers. Most likely is the power supply is bust, i had the same happen to my old 2.1 system.

Depends what you want, a standard 2.1 Logitech or Creative setup is about 30 quid, a top end setup can cost tens of thousands.
