Mine was GTA classics in march of 2008 but I was using Steam earlier in the Winter of 07 with CS:S physical copy that required Steam.

No clue, but the first game I ever activated on Steam was Half-Life 2.
You can actually look at your purchase history in your profile settings under account details to find out if you want.

According to that list, it is:
17. Mai 2011 | SEGA Genesis Classics Pack 4 ROW |
However, to me it looks like the list isn't accurate. The list of games I own is much löonger than the list of games I bought, which is suspecious.
It also suggests I haven't bought a single game in the first year on Steam which sounds weird as well.
So I'm not sure if that info is really true or not.

It's possible that you might of missed load more transactions on the bottom of the page.

nope I did press this button. But it might be possible he has an issue with displaying the transaction data of my 1600+ Steam games ... if everyone else has no issues
Half-Life 2 and CS were the first games I needed Steam to play.......
First purchase on Steam for me was: December 25th, 2007. The game was "Two Worlds"
Probably one of the worst games I've played, let alone spending $20 on it. It looked good and I thought it might scratch that itch I had for something similar to the Gothic games.....oh man, was I horribly mistaken. I think I've put around 10 hours into the game and I just couldn't do it anymore.

My purchase history only goes back to 2012.

I wonder why that is.

Maybe my purchases prior to that were too epic and listing them would not do them justice. hehe :)
Counterstrike way back when. Barely played it. Years later I checked out Steam again and found that I had all the Half Life games including expansions, Team Fortress 1 and 2, and a few other games. I was instantly a fan of Steam and have been using it since. Steam and GOG put all console stores to shame. Until all purchases carry over to the next console they can’t compete. How long has Steam been around?
I must have installed for Orange Box at least in 2009ish, but didn't start being a full fledged Steam user til 2010.
First Purchases starting in 2010: (I was still buying physical PC til Diablo 3 in 2012, from Holiday 2013 onward I see my digital purchases skyrocket)
Half-Life 2!
Whole reason I started to use Steam and never looked back. Though I've been trying to use GoG of late.
@mrbojangles25: Yay GOG!
My history doesn't go any further than 2008. My first was probably Half-Life 2.
Left 4 Dead 2 on March 14th, 2013. Though the first game I ever activated on Steam and the reason I created an account for was Deus Ex: Human Revolution on September 9th, 2011. I remember seeing it at a local store shelf and picking it up because I thought it looked cool. It turned out to be one of my favorite games.

First thing I activated was the Half-Life Anthology, sometime in 2004. First actual in-store purchase was Day of Defeat Source in November of 2005.
How Steam has grown and changed in the past decade. I used to buy and game on it primarily. These days, my usage is fragmented between multiple storefronts and platforms.
I created a Steam account, like so many others, when I bought Half Life 2 at launch. Got CounterStrike Source, and Episode One when it came out. And Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. Damn that game was awesome. I don't really remember when Steam became a store where you could get more than just Valve games, it happened so gradually it seems. But then, Portal and The Orange Box ("the best deal in videogame history" -IGN). I feel like that was the beginning of it all. The original Steam Sale package deal. Got that at launch, still have the box on my bookshelf to this day. Because the box had most of the games I already had on Steam, along with the new ones, I gave my original account to a friend and started a new one with those five games. That's the one I still use, now with 146 games.
I resisted going all in on Steam for a long time, still buying everything on disc, back when you could do that. I can't seem to find an easy way in steam to organize my games by purchase date, but quickly glancing down the list, it looks like the earliest purchases after the Orange Box games in 2007 were in 2012, and most of them I also have on disc, so they're probably just games that I registered with steam after buying. Then there's a whole shitload of games bought in December 2012. So, I think it was probably the winter sale that year when I finally gave in. First game I bought in that sale was probably Alan Wake on December 6th, 2012.
Damn the evolution of Steam has been crazy.
I remember being forced to register for Steam when Half Life 2 first launched. I found it odd as I bought a retail copy. Never purchased anything from there but I did get a few freebies. But man, they spammed me for years to get me to buy something. I think my account had been finally removed just a few years ago as I don’t get spam by them anymore.
@warmblur: Thanks for the tip!
A bit embarrassing, but it was apparently Defense Grid: The Awakening... wtf...?
Not sure if this is entirely accurate, as I remember having a steam account in 2006 and had Half Life and Half LIfe 2 (disc versions though, but I thought they registered with steam). But it says KOTOR in 2009, which is true as I had the disc version and remember buying the Steam version hoping it worked better with Vista/Windows 7. Just not sure if it's really the first game I got on the platform
HL2 14 years ago.
I'm old.
:(

What's embarrassing about Defense Grid? That game was dope.
