Hello there. So, basically, this is my PC: asus radeon HD 6870, 4gb ddr3 ram, intel quad core q8300 2.5Ghz, windows 7 64bit. The game I primarily play and pretty much the only game I will play on my PC in the forseeable future is Guild Wars 2. Now, GW2 runs pretty much like **** At the lowest settings I get around 25 FPS in WvW and when battles get big the FPS is comparable to a powerpoint presentation.

I think the obvious choice of what to upgrade is the processor. Now, which processor do you guys think is good enough to make the game run at atleast 30FPS without ever dropping, and without it being too expensive?

Thanks.

K means it can overclock and you can get better performance out of the cpu from doing that.

They have neglected to say that i5 3570k won't be working on your socket. You will need to get a new mobo.

If you're getting the 3570k, then obviously you'll be doing some overclocking. It's best to use a different cpu cooler than the stock cooler for the cpu. If not, then the stock cooler will do just fine with a 3570 or a 3570 on stock speeds. It uses an LGA 1155 socket, so maybe a z77 type motherboard if your budget is okay?

You sound like me. Only I was picking between the 3770 and 3770k. I ended up getting the 3770 because of the added security features it has that the k doesn't have. Plus I never bother with overclocking.

I use both, they are amazing! Just don't OC before getting the right kind of cooling.

Yeah lol, what security features does the regular 3570 or 3770 have that, that the k series doesn't? its the same chip with an unlocked multiplier.

I don't fully understand the extent of the features, but I know they benefit use in professional environments and advanced VM use.

Thank you all for your posts, I just have a couple of questions more.

When I get this, for how long will it last, meaning can I go a couple of years before another upgrade?

Is it possible for me to install these things myself, is it complicated, is there a chance I might break something?

Is this all I need? Is there a chance I might also need to upgrade something else, like if the housing is too small. Meaning I get the RAM the Motherboard and the Processor.

OK, so I've found that my mobo is 12inch x 8.2 inch while the one I want is 12inch x 9.6inch, could this be a problem?

svenus97
Whether you're using an aftermarket CPU cooler or stock, clean off the old thermal paste with 91% isopropyl alcohol, and put about a pea size of thermal paste on the CPU. Seating the heatsink on it will spread it by itself. If you want to use the butter spread method, use a business card or something similar and spread it really thin or else the thermal paste will ooze out to the side and you'll be in somewhat of a pickle.

It is not necessary but recommended. You ought to say that. Edit: I use the thermal paste that comes with the CPU together with a H100. Keeps the temp below 50C for me at 4.2GHz. The current room I got it on is also a few degrees colder than what is normal so I rarely go above 43C.

If you are getting a non-k (no overclocking) chip, the paste you get with the cooler will do you ok. If you do plan on getting a k chip then investing in a quality paste is always a good idea. Also, have you decided on a MOBO and CPU?

there is already thermal paste on the bottom of the heatsink fan, so no need to do anything else.  I have the 3770k but i havent overclocked it, its a beast the way it is.  Also cleaning the old thermal paste off is a pain in the arse, if you don't have cleaning solution.

Without any residue left? That is impossible, thermal paste is very thick so a proper clean up job can take upwards of 10 minutes with the cleaning solution...ie cleaning both the cpu AND the bottom of heatsink.  Without cleaning solution, and the purifier it can take a much longer time.  Also the longer youve had the thermal paste on the cpu, I find the longer it takes to clean off.

10 minutes? Rubbish. What cleaning solution are you using? Mayonaise? Rubbing alcohol will take it all off in seconds. Just get the 99% lanolin free and youre good to go.

I use the arctic silver 5 cleaning kit with the purifier.  I follow the manufacturers recommended steps, since the cpu isnt something I want to mess up, especially an expensive one like the i7.

I have the same kit and it takes like a minute to do...

there is already thermal paste on the bottom of the heatsink fan, so no need to do anything else.  I have the 3770k but i havent overclocked it, its a beast the way it is.  Also cleaning the old thermal paste off is a pain in the arse, if you don't have cleaning solution.

I did mine with a tissue in 10 seconds. Maybe it depends on the paste used.

As i said it must depend on the paste used - this was when i replaced my stock cooler with my 212+. I guess the paste on the stock cooler was a bit crap.

10 minutes? Rubbish. What cleaning solution are you using? Mayonaise? Rubbing alcohol will take it all off in seconds. Just get the 99% lanolin free and youre good to go.

Eh, not really that important, rubbing alcohol or acetone work perfectly fine
