A pretty big difference actually. Look at the GTX(1GB) vs. the GTS(640mb) They differ quite a bit. Once the new DX10 games come out that extra 360mb on the GTX will mean alot.

Yes, they will perform quite nicely, the GTS and the GTX do great now, as for the 8800 320mb GTS I dont know, mainly because its not out yet.

The memory is used for a variety of things.  One of which, likely the most common, is for textures.  A single 1024x1024 texture with 24-bit color will need 3 MB of space.  In addition to textures, it can also be used to store vertex and polygon buffers (an array of vertex positions and polygon arrangements that make up levels, characters, and other 3D objects, even some 2D objects), and other graphics-related elements such as the program for shaders.  Storing it in video memory boosts performance since the data has less distance to travel before being processed by the GPU.

The larger memory is really only helpful at high resolutions.

Gen- when did the GTX get 1gb?

The main difference between the GTX and the GTS, is not the memory, but the number of shaders and their speed.

With the 320MB GTS? Hell yes. It's funny how people think that the 8800GTS is somehow weak or a cheap ass card. That's far from the truth. The GTS is a beast and obliterates all the DX9 cards.

Higher only if you're planning to play your games on 30'+ monitors at native resolution or with AA/AF etc, all turned up to the max. If you're just playing on 1280x1024, even 128-256mb would suffice.
