It's the time it takes for your computer to talk with the host, expressed in milliseconds.

The lower the better. Talking about FPSs and fighting games, when it goes over 150-200 it starts to become unplayable.

This, Ideal ping for those types of gaming is 90ms or below. Like he said above, the lower the better.

Many things factor into this, your ISP, your connection speed, your ISP's routing, your personal network speed, the quality of all the wires, on the poles, to your house, in your house, and going to your pc.

As well as software settings, and other software than can slow your internet to a crawl, as well as increase your pings, significantly, I am having trouble locating the problem with high ping with 1 of the 3 pc,s on my network. I have tried everything I know to work on it, I posted in hardware, maybe someone will recommend me try something that I haven't thought of yet.

Ping also depends on the distance between the server host and player,More the distance more the ping.

Its what everyone else has stated. For example with 1000ms ping you effectively have 1second worth of lag. So keeping ping below 100 means your effectively attempting to keep updates between your PC and the server / other pcs within 1/10th of a second worth of lag. Lower is better but dont expect to get below 30s often unless your within one or 2 nodes of the server.

High ping in FPS games: you move, 5 seconds later your character goes back to where he was 5 seconds ago.

Everything lower than 180ms is fine

Its the quantitative measurement everyone calls "lag." Many people are under the misconception that faster throughput speed (megabits per second) means lower lag. When you have a steady successful connection, a higher mpbs is nice...but for games, a low ping is what you want.

You can't say that one ping is good for all games. I know with Red Orchestra, I always had a ping of 250-350ms, and had no trouble. But trying to play something like Quake III or Counter-Strike with a ping above 75ms is going to be really frustrating.

Ping is the amount of time it takes for you to send packets to the server/host and get a response back. The lower the better. If you have a high ping, say, 150ms, then there will be a noticeable delay in you shooting and the bullets actually hitting. Whereas, if you have a 60ms ping, it probably won't be noticeable. Basically, you shoot at someone. Your computer sends that information, as packets, to the server. The server gets the packets, and sends packets of information to you. When you get the packets, you see the guy getting shot.

I'd use Let Me Google That For You (LMGTFY) but I'm sick and tired of it, just do it and you might even find a famous site called Wikipedia which will explain anything to you about anything you'd like to

Would take you much less time to just type PING into google (or what is PING?) and youd get a very quick answer.

Easy, someone posted, then realized they necro'd a thread, then deleted their post.

Which is why its only on the 2nd page of topics, cause it was bumped, but the post that bumped it was deleted. So there wasn't one above yours.

PING means Packet Internet Groper.PING helps to check the connection strength between the computers connected in a LAN.Ping time is measured in MS.While checking results in ping ,if the sent and received data is equal then the connection is Good(i.e there is no loss in data packets). If it's not equal then the data loss occurs in the results and there is no connection between the pc/website.If your ping is high the connection gets slow,Ping needs to be low.Low ping is Good for Playing games. You can check the Ping of the Internet Connection easily...To check Local LAN Connection Ping by using the Following method GO to start->run->cmd->Ping ip-address or you need to check Ping for website from your computer means you can reach here http://www.whoisxy.com/ and do the Ping test for yahoo,Google etc.

I remember when I used to play Quake 3 PR1.6 on the US Dreamcast servers with 33.6k modem and 400ms ping. Fun times.
